So my dog Tara (6.5 years old) had kidney stones surgically removed on Saturday. Amazing I was out of town snow sking when it all happened. Thank god my son acted quickly and didn't mess around with it and took her to emergency when she was trying to pee and nothing would come out, she had blockage. The Dr said her bladder was twice as big as normal, they put urine catheter in her, and doc said enough urine came out to fill 2 liter bottles! This is what they removed. The whole ordeal cost me $2,800, and because she works at a vet clinc, she got a discount of $1,300. Good thing my normal vet did the surgery on a Saturday ($1,120), total cost could have been like $15k. My girl is worth it though.

Did the vet come to a conclusion that the feed was the cause?

Did the vet come to a conclusion that the feed was the cause? No conclusions yet or even an opinion, but doc did give us specific food to give her for now. I have not had a chance to talk to the doc yet, I just got home yesterday morning. I'll post up info when I get it. I suspect doc wants to see results from the lab.

Dang, She's worth it though.
I figure if I take the total cost, and amortize it over all the hugs and licks she gives me, cost per lick is probably pretty low.

Man Bladder stones are no fun. Especially when they get stuck in the urethra and block everything. Glad your pup is on the mend. This was my first surgery to do out of school. Boss hadn't let me cut a spay or neuter, then I diagnose bladder stones and he's like great, go cut em out.  Its a pretty satifying sugery usually. Dogs are so much better almost immediatly when they wake up from anesthesia.

We’re there any other symptoms. Besides no being able to urinate? Awesome she is on the mend!

I try to always watch all 4 of my females when they pee. Haven’t had any issues with UTI or the like like issues for several years.

A little back ground, so I have been on 4 ski trips this season, every single one of them there has been some emergency, some so bad I cannot discuss on the internet. But Ski trip before this one, my wife and Ryan call me "Something is wrong with Tara, she is not moving at all.." So they take her to emergency "$$$", doc says says she is fine, depressed, yes she is crushed when I leave on a trip without her. So I tell my son this trip, just take her to the park and throw the ball, she will forget all about me. So he does that, and day 1 I'm gone I get an emergency phone call from him "Is it normal she walks around and tries to pee and nothing comes out?" And I'm like yeah, she is really weird, she thinks she is a male dog, and wants to mark her territory and she does not always have enough pee to go around. And I give him a hard time "about the drama" and he hangs up on me and takes her to emergency. I'm glad he does have his own brain, and Tara is alive because of it.

A lot of cases of stones are discovered with a dog presents to the vet for bloody urine or other signs of UTI, especially recurrent uti. Not always the case though. I’ve found some just palpating an abdomen and the bladder feels like it’s full of gravel. There are various types of stones. Each have their own predisposing factors and management. A lot are surgical, then a specialized diet to try and prevent recurrence.

Results came back, she has the most common stones, struvite. She will be on special diet now. The good news there is that they can be pretty easily managed/prevented with the prescription diets we have now. Hope you pup is doing well now.

Hope you pup is doing well now. She great thx, back to her old self. I just hope she never needs surgery again to remove them. Reading that article I posted, sounds like less risk with older dogs, she 6 years old. I’m about to take her to the park and throw some marks.
