Going to the ranch this weekend and figured I would bring the foxpro and thermal. I usually only hunt at night for pigs so was going to see how y’all hunt coyotes at night. Do y’all pan the whole time with the thermal or only every few minutes? Will probably hunt an hour before dark to an hour or two past.

you really need to be scanning, with the thermal or light of some kind. I have a couple of hand held thermals for scanning purpose and they work very well, I still have them sneak up on me and be withing 30-50 yards while using them though, sometimes from behind me downwind. if you use a light once you see eye shine go to the thermal or rent a hand held from Ultimate night vision or borrow one.

Im working on my patience though, I struggle after there isnt any action for 30 minutes.

Pretty much this. Even when you have dogs coming in, you need to be scanning. I let my guard down one night when I was working 2 dogs in from about 800 yards out. When they hit the ditch I did a quick scan around and had a dog 20 yards behind me just chilling. Quickly shot him and one of the others

So can you bait them? Like chicken parts or something?

Absolutely, Ive done it with dead hogs.

The key is that they cant finish eating it in multiple nights, youll have to put more if needed.

They need to get used to coming back and not being disturbed. Once they get used to it, ill set a bunch of steel traps all around that area.

Killed 8 in one night that way, but tons of prep involved.

The wind is the most important aspect. Most will circle downwind of you when they are coming in.

Ended up calling a few in since I posted this and others came to much on some hogs that met their end while I was calling as well.

Happy to sleep a few less hours to keep knocking dogs down
