Went out yesterday to my small place in SW Young county to top off feeders and take care of anything else needing attention, cold morning and day around 36 degrees. Was listening to the Alex Murdaugh live trial on Sirius radio while topping off the protein feeder and changing out batteries on game cameras. Anyhow, I get to one of my tripods and it has blown over. I proceed to work on it some, adjusting things and a box blind nearby as well, all the time listening to the radio through the rolled down driver window and had left a door open maybe for 30 minutes or so. You can maybe guess what happened, in that short time with radio on and door open, I ran down the cranking charge on the battery. I decide to go out to FM road and try to flag someone to give me a jump, I do have jumper cables. After a few trucks pass me by, I flag down a big rig truck and explain my predicament. The guy, Ryan and his buddy tell me no problem and hop up in the back to go jump the truck. Ryan's rig had a nice hydraulic winch lift in the back, turns out Ryan operates Crossland Outdoors. We go into my place, jump start the truck and I offer Ryan and his buddy some $$$ for their time and effort to which Ryan politely declines and let's me know, "no problem for a fellow Texan hunter". Long story short, Ryan and his bud really did this bonehead a solid yesterday out of the goodness and generosity of his heart. I have few doubts that Ryan runs a solid operation with Crossland Outdoors. At Ryan's suggestion, I had the battery tested in Graham at the AutoZone and wouldn't you know it was at full charge and cranking level. After getting home, I texted and thanked my new friend Ryan once again; this next season we're planning to kick a few suds and food back.

Hey.....It happens. Last summer we took my wifes car to a Galveston beach and listened to the radio with the trunk open. When we got ready to leave, I was in the same shape as you were. After asking this guy near us for a jump, he didnt have any cables and I thought I was going to have to call someone to give us a jump. Luckily , there were 2 very nice looking girls about 20 years old down the beach. I walked down and asked if they had any cables for a dead battery. The best looking one in a very small filled out 2 piece bikini said wait a minute. She bent over and dug into her car and pulled out one of those portable battery packs her dad had given her for just such emergencies. 5 minutes later and I was back in business. That was the only time my wife had not minded me talking to 2 girls with so little clothing on.

Yep, it happens. Reason I have cables and a Viking power pack in every vehicle and keep it charged or else it too is no good. Good on Ryan!

Very lucky and nice of them to help you. I did the exact same thing at my lease once. Only there was no one to flag down anywhere near where I was. I thought about borrowing a solar panel off a nearby oil or gas rig for a couple hours or three and putting it back after I started my truck, but I would never do that as it might be illegal. blush wink wink

I get too remote sometimes and often out of cell phone range. After that day and a couple other close calls I ended up putting dual batteries in my last two vehicles. One of the first things I am going to do with my upcoming new truck too.

This is exactly why I keep an Audew battery pack under the back seat in my truck. It wasn't cheap but it is worth the peace of mind to know I will always have battery power to start my truck because I get into some pretty remote places as well. I also replace the battery in my truck every two years whether it needs it or not just to be sure.

Somewhat of a rookie mistake here. Who listens to the radio without their truck running?

Guilty as charged, AutoZone guy that tested it said it was probably more the dome light from door open than radio playing draining it. City slicker not thinking enough Hud, was a dumb move on my part for sure..

Don't know what brand of vehicle you are driving. My wife has a 2011 Toyota 4Runner that she has done this on several times. What I learned is that if you pull in and park but don't remove the key and open the door, the headlights and taillights stay on. Now if she stops somewhere (Sonic) and want to listen to the radio, she knows to open the door and remove her keys. Then she can put the key back into the ignition and turn it one click to get the radio on.
We also have jumpstarted boxes in our vehicles now.
Thanks for the reminder, time to recharge ours.

it happens ... glad you were close enough to find someone to help.

now I have to go check our vehicles ... I know that my truck the interior lights will automatically turn off after a little bit when the door is left open, not sure if I left the key on for the radio

I had a couple of bulls in my trailer the other day. I got out to do something that took several minutes, and they were really rocking the rig around. So much so that it apparently jostled the truck enough to set off the power lock button. I pull on the handle, and nothing. I'm locked out. Except I have a dread fear of being locked out and so I had rolled down the driver's window in preparation of just such an event. That would have not been a fun phone call and lengthy wait.

I remember in the old days listening to the truck radio for a couple hours without it running and it would crank no problem. Doesn't work like that these days.

Few years ago I had a truck and trailer parked waiting to load something up in a spot that I wasn't really supposed to park in. After about an hour of the hazards blinking, dang thing wouldn't start.

I have jumper cables in every car and everyone in the family got one of those jump packs for Christmas. On top of cars sucking more battery than they used to, they don't make batteries like they used to either. It's amazing the number of them that fail prematurely these days, after only a year or 2.

I have one of those small power packs that comes with large clips for connecting to a car or truck battery. I've never had to use it and must admit I've always been skeptical such a small battery could start a car. A good friend has one much like it and said it had enough juice to start his truck when he once needed it. Battery technology has no doubt made some great advances in the past decade or so.

Mines not one of those small units. 630 Peak Amp Portable Jump Starter and Power Pack with 250 PSI Air Compressor. Have used it on my truck and the wife's Jeep when both batteries were failing.

Just goes to show with all the crappy chit going on today in this world the majority of folks out there are still great people! Especially those that do what we do and enjoy the outdoors!

I bought one of the small jump starters, well bought one with I forget how many cold cranking amps and have used it for my car, the Wife's car and several others. One day I guess it was a battery dying day. Jumped 7 times between my car and others while out shopping including 3 trucks with V8s and still had charge for a couple more jumps but charged it when I got home. Glad I had charged it the night before that day.

Kmon, what do those run, ballpark? Small enough to store under a truck's backseat?

Bought it about 3 years ago at Autozone. I think it was about $160 then for this one, about double what another was there with less storage and larger. Got the smaller one to fit in the storage box on the 4wlr that was draining down and didn't want to be in the woods and have the wife or myself walk out if it happened through the swamp muck.

It lives under the car seat or center console, most of the time with the cables and in bag is less about 2 inches wider than just the charger part. It has been well worth the price.

I bought this bad boy a couple years ago and it has done a wonderful job of starting stuff. Rated for diesel engines and it has in fact, got the skid steer running at our deer lease on a couple of occasions.
