I’ll start a new one, as the last one went astray. It will be suppressed, it will not be meant for long range. I like them as short as reasonable since I’m adding a suppressor. What is a good round with a good happy point on range and barrel length?

Or should I just plan on shooting everything in the neck with my 7-08?

20" barreled magnum is still a magnum.
I will be having my own 20", suppressed 28 Nosler shooting 195's. Should still be making 2900 fps at the muzzle. Thats still lots of power and extremely capable of good energy delivery at long range if I want it to.

It'll definitely light up the night (maybe even the day) with all the unburnt powder coming out the front. Feasible? Yes but unless you adjust the load your just wasting powder out the front in a short barrel magnum.

How short a barrel is your suppressor rated for with a magnum? This is a lot of trouble to save a few inches.

300wsm would be exactly where I would go for a short barreled magnum for mid (500 and in) distance-- good factory ammo, components, etc

350 Remington Magnum is my short range thumper for a magnum. Inside 350 yards I am really comfortable with it and critters to at least elk size are no problem. 225gr Partition at 2700fps from a 22 inch barrel is enough for anything I will hunt

I debated on which 30 caliber to make my short barrel big game rifle from. My two top contenders were 300 Ruger Compact Magnum which was designed for 20 inch barrels but I was concerned about brass availability so went with the 300 WSM. I stay with the mid weight bullets 175-180gr and from my 20 inch barrel 2850-2900 is easy to do with H4350. I have been loading the same 40 pieces of once fired range pickup Barnes brass for 4 years.

I would go with one of the WSM’s. That short fat powder column gives up less than most in a short barrel.
