My Lab is showing early signs of Hip Dysplasia. Anyone use over the counter supplements with success? Any to stay clear of? I appreciate any inputs you may have.

Yes, Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM Joint Health Supplement for Dogs. On sale right now at Costco for ~$27 for 180 count. My black lab is 12.5 and I have been giving her these most of her life after my last lab developed hip dysplasia. She currently has cancer, but still absolutely loves going on walks and to the park. Never had any joint issues even in her old age.

She is only 4. GSH/Lab mix...she has the hips and energy of a GSH and the rest of her body is Lab. Happiest/easiest going dog I've ever been around. Even when tackled by another Lab, she gets up without a fuss (other than a bit of hip pain).

cosequin, dasuquin, Purina J/M food. Fish oil capsules can also be of benefit.
All of the supplements slow the progression of disease at best. I she's already painful, I'd recommend talking to you vet about NSAIDs for pain releif.
There are also surgical options potentially. Full hip replacements are done relatively routinely these days.

Dasuquin. It's not going to "cure" anything - but certainly can help. Our dogs have been on it pretty much their entire life.
It's a shame that RVI injections are no longer available. It worked too well off label for a variety of things (dogs and humans; originally developed for horses) so it got poofed. Used it personally on my own dogs and myself. Completely safe too. I'd pay just about any price to have a few more vials.

Sorry to hear this, but this is why you buy pups from reputable breeders with health clearances.

I don't want to hijack this thread with a debate if it is worth it or not to pay the price for a pup with health clearances, but it is. That is my point for those looking to buy a pup. Some people look at their dogs as tools, and their mentality is buy pups on the cheap, if there is health issue, just put the dog down. But for those who fall in love with their dog, it is well worth the price to buy a pup with health clearances. Had a buddy his dog got hip dyspepsia, bought from a back yard breeder. Sad. Friend of mine this year bought a pup, I tried to talk him into buying a pup with health clearances, he chose the cheap path. I hope his risk taking pays off, I know he will be crushed if his dog has issues.

My vet recommended two supplements for my Brittany. Vetriscience Glyoflex 3 and Vetoquinol Flexadin Advanced. Both are available on Amazon.

Ask your vet about Adequan injections. While it does not help every dog, it can make a big difference for some of them. I was having to pull one of mine from the field early, or it would be very sore. After starting the injections, it’s been a game changer. I can leave the dog down for 9, or 10 miles (GPS collar) and it not have a problem.

I’m going through this with my 4year old chessie.

Hi Slimpickin, Hip Dysplasia has to be diagnosed with xrays. But, if that's the case tramadol, and Rimadyl are the meds. Good luck with your buddy!
Stay feral my friends
