I had the pleasure to host an outing this past weekend for a group of men from our church at our property in East TX. One of the men had never hunted before so I was in the stand with him when hog hunting and I had the opportunity to use a thermal camera that my son recently purchased. It was an
InfiRay Xinfrared T2 Pro Thermal Monocular and I was pretty impressed with it for a sub $500 thermal.
It’s a small camera that connects directly to a smart phone and uses a phone app to control the settings and record video, audio and pictures. He purchased a kit that has a handle that the phone and camera clamps in and it makes it easy to hold and maneuver.
The resolution is 256x192 and base magnification is 2x, the image quality looks pretty darn good on the phone. I was able to tell hogs from deer at 200 yards or so and I could detect deer sized animals at 700-800 yards. I own an
AGM Taipan TM19-384 that I purchased for $1,800 tht I am very happy with. Its resolution is 384x288 and base magnification is 1.9X. The image quality was T2 Pro is good and, in some ways, maybe better than the TM19 but theT2 Pro thermal resolution is not quite as good as the TM19 resolution. The field of view seems larger than the TM19 probably due to the phone’s screen size. Glare is a problem for the phone in daylight hours as there is nothing to shield it but at night this is not an issue. I used the T2 Pro for 2-3 hours and it reduced my phone battery from 90% to 70% during that time.
The app is Xinfrared, is intuitive and easy to use and has a number of thermal color pallets i.e. white hot, black hot, red hot, etc. I preferred white hot but black hot looked good also.
I have attached links to a couple of videos I took with the T2 Pro, one is of my friend shooting hogs at 125 yards and the other is I believe deer at 700-800 yards. I apologize for my videographer skills which need to be improved. As is typically the case, the video quality is not quite as good as when viewing real time on the phone but its close.
I think the T2 pro is an excellent entry level thermal monocular system that will allow hunters to get into a thermal monocular for less than half the price of other thermals. I am not a thermal expert by any means, and have no connection to any of these companies, these are just my observations so take them for what they are worth.
