So I've been slowly going through several knives that were my dads and grandfathers. (I have no idea of any value, and that's not really the concern), but is there someone / place to go to or send them to, to see if they can be repaired / cleaned up. IE, spots on blades, I have one Western brand knife that the guard is loose, etc. I'd just like to have them usable if I'm going to keep them. Thanks

You got a pic of the old western? My grandad had 3. I have one, my sis has 1, and my dad has 1. Great knives.

That western is in nice shape. The handle is made from disks of leather staked in between the tangs. My guess is that the leather has dried out and shrank, causing the guard to be loose. I would soak the handle in neatsfoot oil compound. That should cause the leather to swell up and tighten the guard up. Once tight, wipe off any excess, and let dry a few days. Then buff the handle with wax. I like to use Birchwood Casey's gun stock wag. It works great on leather. That sheath could probably use a light coat of oil and some wax too.

To add, polish the blade, guard, and pommel with some polishing compound (I like Flitz) on a dremmel polishing wheel. Careful not to cut yourself, and that knife will look good as new.

This was my grandfather's. Sheath was custom made by a buddy of mine.
