Howdy folks,
I'm going to be heading down to South Texas (Laredo) towards the end of the month to do some hog hunting. I'm from Michigan and I'm use to hunting in much colder temperatures this time of year. What would you recommend for hunting clothes? Snake boots? Briar proof pants/bibs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Some people suggest snake boots, I always wear them…. Your going to want something over your legs or you jeans and legs will be scratched in my opinion. There are multiple choices, I wear something similar to these and also put on Filson double tin chaps when I have to go thru the thick stuff. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2023/01/full-6590-376373-2c2f84f7_8794_48d3_b28f_8ae7088149a5.jpeg) I always wear snake boots and typically wear this style of pants when I’m hunting anywhere but, especially South Texas. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2023/01/full-6590-376374-0a171ba8_2d93_45ce_a744_96be8efbea21.png) Link will not work so, here is a picture of the pants I’d suggest.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

No doubt you are used to much colder temps for sure but don't be surprised if it is a tad nippy. Then again, don't be surprised if you are hunting in a t-shirt in the afternoons either. lol I'd look at the weather forecast and bring with you what you need for those temps. As far as snake boots go, you damn skippy. I do not get off the road in S Tx without mine on...ever! If you do not own snake boots there is no reason to go and spend $200-$300 for a good pair of them https://www.foreverlastonline.com/SNAKE-GUARD_c_23.html
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

'Hope you have a great hunt! Regarding apparel - a t-shirt with "La 'Migra" printed on it, front and back, would be a nice touch.

I typically wear jeans and pull on work boots. Have snake chaps but rarely wear them.
Guess it depends on what kind of hunting you will be doing too. I would recommend some kind of bug repellent if you will be out and about in the brush… ticks can be pretty rough.

Dress in layers such as bib overalls and a lined jacket. Also, Cabela's has their RIDGELINE ESSENTIALS which has lined pants and hooded jacket. Temps can and do vary as much as 40° in one day! Just keep an eye out for the 10 day weather forecast. As for footwear, touch base with the rancher or outfitter where you are hunting, but a mid-calf hunting boot would work in most cases. It might be wise to grab a set of canvass chaps that would serve for brush and snake protection. Hog hunting can be fast and furious or even stationary blinds, depending on what type of hunt you have booked. Good luck!

I've gravitated to the firehose pants from Duluth Trading Company when out in brush. Over my snake boots I feel they offer pretty good protection. Comfortable, and tough.

I’d find out how the hunt was set up first. If you’re hunting in a blind over feeders, your host will probably drive you to the blind, and, other than keeping warm in the pre-dawn cold, or cool in the afternoon heat, there’s not much to it. If you’re corning roads, then shooting out of a high rack, it’s pretty much the same deal. If you’re doing mobile spot and stalk in the dark with thermal/ nv gear, the snake boots are essential, if only to keep most of the thorns and cactus spines out. Either way, bring a pair of work gloves to protect your hands from cuts and scratches. I usually wear lightweight pants for comfort; I also frequently bump into various spines, and do some swearing.

What does your guide say? He knows the situation way better than us keyboard warriors. How he answers you will tell you a lot about what kind of hunt your going to have. If your hunting out of a blind, knee high boots are fine. If it is a spot and stalk night hunt I would use those $59 chaps above over my hunting boots.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

It's pretty easy to see how the weather could be, just look at average temp's. After that, Camo. I kill most of my hogs from a blind, but a good number of them spot and stalk, or just walking to and from my stand. If you have the wind in your face and are camo'd up you'll see your share of hogs for some shot opportunities. It makes a big difference. Vision is not their strong suit. The pattern is your choice. Don't walk down the middle of roads, stay close to cover on one side. I do recommend a day pack so you can shed one layer, should you get warm.
What will you be shooting them with?
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Are you hunting from a blind or stalking or dog hunt or driving around? Snakes probably won't be an issue in late January. If you are blind hunting then bring clothes for what the forecast is showing. Your body will adjust to the temps rapidly and what may not seem cold will effect you differently in damp humid windy conditions. Just watch where you step and what you are walking through as far as brush or cactus and you will be fine. The guide should be able to tell what the ranch is like as far as cover and then what clothes you need. A Carhart jacket is great for walking through taller brush...not quiet for bow hunting.

I meant Dan's bulldog bibs, stupid auto correct. As far as the hunt goes, we're not using a guide service. A buddy of ours who moved down there for work has found us some private land to hunt on. Sounds like night hunting over feeders. Plus while we're down there we're probably gonna look around do some public land hunting. We're basically planning on hunting anything we can that's legal. Also we're looking at possibly doing some bowfishing. Trying to make the most of the trip.

Thorns will be rough on pants but we've found Carhartt and tin cloth type pants are too loud. Really loud when stalking through brush. Now we wear our hunting pants from up here and take it easy through the thick stuff. Cotton pants are quieter but thorns can be hard on them.
Snake boots would be a must I think.
The humidity will make it seem colder, layers as stated would be great.
You're going to get hooked on hog hunting. Don't listen to the folks that say they carry too many diseases to eat, not true for the most part. We know some guy that go down to Oklahoma to hunt hogs and won't even touch them or think about eating them, lol. Have fun !!!

Call the outfitter or ranch you're hunting for their recommendation.
Snake boots are a wise investment but all you might need could be what you already have.
People saying that "there wont be any snakes", I pulled a 5ft snake from the road 2 weeks ago.
