Three seasons I have owned my ranch and I haven’t shot a deer yet. It’s not because they are not there. I just haven’t found the time to go. Since the season opener I have spent a grand total of three hours hunting. I haven’t stepped foot on the ranch since opening weekend. I spent weeks in the off season clearing brush, planting food plots, and filing feeders. I think I may be done after this year. The dream I always had of having a place just hasn’t worked out like I hoped it would. Heck I put a brand new 3/2 house out there in Oct 21 and have spent a total of three nights in it.

I get it. I've owned a place not 15 minutes from my house since 2017 and have sat in a blind 3 or 4 times tops. Seems like the most convenient place to hunt is the hardest one to carve out time for.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Yes, but you can't walk on and enjoy any other kind of true investment, and that investment has done very well in the few years you've had it. Life is getting in the way right now, but that could change in the future.

Yes, but you can't walk on and enjoy any other kind of true investment, and that investment has done very well in the few years you've had it. Life is getting in the way right now, but that could change in the future. Exactly, we don’t over hunt my properties, and I don’t get to spend much time on them, but they have been a really good investment. Hopefully if I live long enough I will get to enjoy them a lot more, if not my kids and grandkids can.

My wife has my life planned a week past my death. It has gotten old quick. Only made it to our ranch 1 time in the off season, have made it down more to hunt, but still haven’t been a lot. That BS is gonna stop, life is t worth living like that. What’s keeping you away? Make time.

Reading your post; unless you are a true blue, diehard hunter, love nature, love the outdoors, like dirt, wannabe farmer…you might have overdone it. You never want to get a place that requires more of your time to maintain than your original goal. Sounds like you have a lot invested in this place to go a few times or none, to hunt a deer. If you’re retired, and you like all of the above, you could be on the right track. Just 1 single great food plot, a built up shipping container, and a feeder might have been the way to go.

. Just 1 single great food plot, a built up shipping container, and a feeder might have been the way to go. That wouldn't have solved his time issue. He didn't say he was too busy working on the ranch to hunt, he was too busy to go to the ranch period

I think the question is what is keeping you from spending time out there? I am self-employed, and my work schedule is very irregular. There might be months where I don’t work a single day and then there might be months where I work every single day and it is all travel 100% of it. For the most part on average, it works out to being gone about 100 to 125 days a year which is roughly 10 days a month but I really have no idea when those days will be and it just so happens that most of them have been during hunting season the past couple years My family is pretty cool and laid-back but I have a wife and two kids and if you are only home five days in a month, it doesn’t really seem right to just ditch them and go hunting. There are things that need to be done around the house and with the family. This summer I don’t think I worked a single day in July or August so I had an awesome break and I probably spent a good 10 maybe 15 days at the ranch working on things and it was no big deal I was able to drive home every night. Do things with the family it was great it just so happens that my work schedule has been insane during hunting season and it’s really beyond my control. The work is for fortune 500 companies and I do stuff when they say or they find someone else

Me, when I bought my ranch many years ago, and still lived in Waxahachie, I scheduled everything around my ranch time, that came first. Since 2009 I have lived on the ranch. But this is a dream I've had since I was a kid.

You only live once...with that being said...the things you have to do comes first for right now. Then comes retirement when you will do the things you want to do. I am retired and enjoying it...I too have a new problem..I lost my least to the solar people and now no lease to go to after having the lease for 30 years. Some how it just doesn't pan out...right.

Got my place 38 years ago. Recreational property good for nothing but hunting and fishing. This year, due to surgery, I got to hunt the last 3 weeks of the season. Saw some deer but they were almost shooters.
Maybe next year.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Make time to go out there the next couple weeks. Now is the time of year when it doesn't need mowed every trip, the spring weather hasn't knocked down a bunch of branches yet, so you can sit and enjoy it a bit.
I bought some land 4 years ago, and it bothers me every day that I haven't built and moved out there yet. I've got a decent RV out there to stay a weekend, electricity, and I'll truck in my water as needed. But every time I went out there I was doing something. Mowing, shredding, cleaning brush. I put in a 6 acre food plot this year, only hunted it once. Sometime it's hard not to look at it as a chore. Add in the same 100+ days on the road this year, and it piles up quick. This last weekend I got to go out there, and didn't have to do anything. Blew some leaves around cause I wanted to, trimmed a couple branches just to try out my new pole saw, and walked up to that burn pile with a can of beer in one hand and a can of diesel in the other. Had a couple buddies over and didn't do nothing but drink beer and watch the fire burn. I finally had a weekend where I didn't *have* to do anything.
It's a great reset.

Don't forget the other hunting seasons in Texas, archery deer adds a month and if muzzleloader season in your county usually adds two weeks. Spring squirrel and turkey. Dove, duck etc....Hogs. Fishing if you have ponds. Plus a great investment and get away.

Don't forget the other hunting seasons in Texas if there is a muzzleloader season in your county usually adds two weeks. I take advantage of that each year in my County. The two times of year I see my best bucks (un-pressured) are the last week in October and again around the 1st of Jan. (survivors)
