We will be burning a 90 acre pasture in the next coming weeks. Restored native prairie, 3rd growing season was this summer, we do not graze this pasture so grass and other fuels are 3-4ft high. Trees are mature post oaks and elms, very light density, should get some thermal pruning on low branches but no trees that should otherwise be harmed. We have had our TPWD Biologist and the fire specialist out and have the green light to move forward. They will be with us on burn day. We’ve cleared the burn lanes and are just waiting for the right conditions.
As mentioned, TPWD will be with us as this is our first burn, but for those with experience, any tips/advice that may not be common sense?

Fire is a wonderful and vastly underutilized tool…. Please post pics of before, during, and after….. In my experience, a hot fast fire is more productive than a slow warm fire!

Have the fire department there when you do it. Quite a bit of liability these days if it gets on someone else’s land.

I wish I could burn about 75% of my place. But Hall County seems to have a perpetual burn ban in place. Good luck with the burn, Double AC.

I'm sure you already know this but alert your local dispatcher. People will call it in when they see the smoke and/or fire going.

I have gone out to several "grass fires" to find dozer piles burning, without a stitch of foliage within 200 feet of them. Farmers burning wheat straw, with 30' wide plowed ground around the perimeter. "All units disregard, this is a controlled burn."

I burn around 2500 acres every other year. If Texas Parks and Wildlife is involved they have to meet all the criteria before fire is started. Getting all conditions correct can sometimes be difficult. I do a lot of burning by myself on small burns like yours but you better have all your ducks in a row before you stike a match. Humidity, wind, temp. where the smoke is going. Early dorment season burn vs a greenup burn makes a differance in end result. I have a 3 year old native restoration project myself and i just run cattle in it for 2 weeks for ground disturbance. Im not ready to burn that yet. Maybe next year at 4 year old. If someone else is burning in your area ask to hang around and observe/help. Best conditions to burn is when the weatherman starts hollering high fire danger. I usually backburn in those conditions. When i do large burns i usually have 4 or 5 bulldozers on site, operators sitting on each one. So far so good for me. Thank the Lord

We are hunting in Hall county like Kry226 and need to do a prescribed burn too on our place. Kry- give me a PM and let's talk about our hunting success etc.
Double AC- how much are the Fire Specialist charging to assist with the control burn or do you have a 3rd party burn contractor helping you and what is the cost per acre.?
thanks

He stated they have help coming out to manage the fire.
Enjoy the experience. Controlled burns of that size should not be anything to worry about if your conditions are right and since you have folks helping it should be fun. Don't panic if you get some crowning on cedars they will burn hot and loud! Have a rake in hand while watching.

Cedars should be DOT classified as a Haz-Mat Flammable Solid, same as gun powder, when it comes to wildland fires.

Be careful, pretty scary if it gets out of control. You don't burn to death, the smoke kills ya.

You bet- I was in one maybe 20 years ago, mostly as a "helping hand" to others and it got sort of out of control- a solid wall of fire maybe 40 feet high and pretty darn worrisome. If I ever get involved in one again- a lot of small back burns as a safe guard.
