I almost didn't plant my wheat field this year due to drought, cost of seed, cost of fertilize and cost of diesel. A lot of my neighbors didn't plant for those reasons. I decided to take a chance, sure glad I did, with timely rains, it's doing great. I'll let the deer enjoy it till sometime in January, then the cows can have it.

For about 14 years we planted about 8 plots every year, about 5 ac each. We are far from farmers and never fertilized. They came up every year good enough for deer.

My 24th wheat field, most have done well. Last year it barely came up, by December there was nothing left. That was the first time that happened. Very little rain in October, none in November or December last year.

I fertilize to put more protein in it, therefore I can feed less hay in January and February.

Ours was always just for deer and just as an attractant. My new place the landowner plants 80 acre for cows at his expense and we get to reap the benefits for the deer.

I hunted a place in Loco Oklahoma the past couple of years. I wish I could grow fields like they do. One of the fields was 1.3 miles long, 350 yards wide.

I did it for many years. Then the hogs moved in and pretty well destroyed everything.

Looks great. My field looks rough after the 10 degree days. I put nitrogen on it before it got cold but oh well maybe it will perk back up with 60 degrees later this week if not it is what it is.
