Which models to avoid and which ones are good machines. Especially older Rangers or Mules.

From my experience of owning over 20 UTVs so far I'd stick with Kawasaki and stay away from Polaris for sure. The factory warranty tell you all you need to know....

Polaris: 6mo warranty and they won't sell you anymore "factory" warranty, only a secondary market warranty

Kawasaki: 36mo warranty and they will sell you up to 6 years of "factory" extended warranty

As to older models, 610s and 3010s are bulletproof, the 4010s will give you throttle body issues unless you run only non-ethanol gas in them, otherwise plan on a new throttle body (fuel injection) every 300-400 hours.

The Mule PRO-FXT is by far the best utility UTV on the market and they are pretty much bullet proof. We currently run 4 of them here at the ranch and 2 up in AR and had virtually no issues with them.

In my opinion, second best in CanAm

I had two Polaris 6x6's - had a big issue with one of them while under warranty and dealing with Polaris was a nightmare -

Kawasaki for sure.
Older models
550, 600 610 are the smaller ones, bullet proof.
3000 and 3010 are bulletproof as well. No common issues except for the throttle body that WC mentioned.
600 series has some fouling plug issues, a ngk bpr4es plug will usually fix that.

Hard to kill a mule but those non-Pro FTX models will have you pissing blood for a week. They are rough…I think I’d likely deal with a broke down Polaris than those. wink

I believe Polaris has a one year warranty. My 2021 Ranger XP1000 came with an extra year warranty on a IDme promotion(medical field) my wife qualified for. So with a full 2 year warranty I started leaning Polaris over Kawasaki.

I started out sold on the Mule solely due to it's reputation for mechanical reliability. After spending a weekend in my hunting partners Ranger, looking at my likely use and environment, the good history my hunting partners had with them, I bought my Ranger. If I used my machine daily, farm use, work, I may have decided differently. Also I didn't want the doors on the Mule. We mostly are on dry, bladed dirt roads. We cover 16k acres so there are a lot of 30-45 minute rides to a hunting set up. Speed and comfort were a big consideration. We do get some mud, climb steep rocky hills and carry 600 lbs of feed at times. I've had it 14 months, two deer seasons and have 170 hours. The fluid maintenance is easy.

Tell us your needs, environment and amount of use.

The first thing we do is take the front doors off. I'll put a PRO-FXT up against any other UTV on ride quality as long as they have similar tires on them. Stiff sidewall tires will make any of the ride rougher.

For a non-crew cab model I think Honda's are hard to beat. I love my Pioneer, and am not a fan of my Ranger.

Many factors to consider. One that is often overlooked is turning radius. ALso when I bought, supply was an issue. I was 6 months out on the Mule, I got one of the last Rangers available. Did you redirect your exhaust due water crossings or some other reason? I recall that being an issue on your builds.

Yes sir....and auto or paddle shift.

Also, whatever you do, get one with power steering. Worth every penny.

I have a 2018 Can Am HD 8 crew cab and have nothing but great things to say about it. Has a touch over 430 hours on it and it hasn't lived the easiest life, but is quiet, very peppy and does everything i ask it to do and some things I don't think it could do.

Next machine will be the FXT Pro- a Tad smaller machine, but I don't need the large bed in the can am anymore so I'll be interested to spend some time in that rig. I don't think you can go wrong with either the FXT Pro or the Can An Defender. I stay away from Polaris

My two picks are can am and mule pro ftx also. Two different machines but both are extremely capable. I’ve been all over NM and TX mountains in both FXT and Can Am.

I wouldn’t let a kid drive an HD10 but would FXT

FWIW....Polaris machines seem to be much easier to find that either Kawasaki or Can Am's.

It appears that dealerships have a decent amount of Polaris inventory in stock

No belt mafia. Kawi is loud as hell, Polaris and can ham are equal. Honda is what I bought and when it works right it is a great machine and I did not break it.

Loud in the cab or loud out side?

Crew HD10 is louder out side than front seat inside when compared to Mule Pro FX. Mule is louder inside than outside compared to can am HD10 crew. Get in a single can am hd10 and there is a huge difference in noise, it’s louder than pro inside. In the can am crew the motor is further back so it quieter in side when driving. Now can am cab blows the mule out of the water. Mule pro back seat partially sets over the engine where can am is basically completely under the bed. Mule is much quieter outside noise then HD10.

Talon isnt in the same ball park on noise it’s a lot of decimals higher than both. Pioneer is quieter than the HD8 but not HD10. Polaris 1000XP and HD8 are about same noise. the 540 is loudddddd

I don’t think you could go wrong with Honda, Kawi or Can Am though

When you want to look fast but go slow, buy the Talon. When you want to go fast, buy the Polaris.

My belt hasn’t broke yet and I beat mine every chance I get. How many miles does that Honda have on a failed sub trans?

Prolly due to more production capacity. I believe they have more market share than most others combined. Doesn't mean they are "The Best", but when all things are factored in they're chosen most often.

I’m sure the Honda is a reliable machine and I love their 4 wheelers, but I was not impressed in any way with the pioneer. The 1000 was loud as hell

Those year model Polaris’s were very reliable.

As explained to me by my dealer ( who sells Kawasaki, Polaris, Can Am and Yamaha ) the later year model Rangers had parts farmed out to China, the rear ends had major issues at low hours. My buddy had 4 Polaris rangers in the shop with rear end problems at around 20-30 hours. This problem was around 2015-2019 so they may have corrected the issue by now.

So all that was warrantied I assume. I'm new to the whole UTV world and only have my 2021 Ranger XP 1000 as reference. I've stuck to scheduled maintenance and had no issues. Other than what you mention about the rear ends, I don't hear any specific negatives, just that they're not as good as...........name the brand. Other than what you mention what should late model Ranger owners look out for?

I did hear from my dealer on an air filter issue that caused engine failure. On one, the air filter box was not fully closed, the end user left one clip unfastened, it was somewhat hidden on the backside. A lot of dust got in, engine overhaul. On another, rather than change the air filter, user chose to blow it off with an air hose. The high pressure air forced the dirt through the paper filter, perforated it, dust in, engine overhaul.

I have zero performance issues with mine, only time will tell if it is mechanically dependable.
