I have walked up on two porcupines in the dark in Stephens County and they scared the crap out of me! They also make a very strange set of sounds...there is sort of a chirping/mewing kinda of sound and a thuding/chomping sound. An experience that that every outdoors person should experience once.!!!!

Porky climbing the panel. Definitely creepy and probably deserving a bullet.

For what purpose? Armadillos dig holes that cattle break their legs in. Rattlesnakes can kill you. Coons screw up your feeder. Coyotes kill fawns and calves. There's plenty of coons, snakes and armadillos. You could shoot a dozen and not tell that you are missing any. I can see all them getting shot. What does a porcupine do that deserves getting shot?

Hell on trees and dogs. Other then that not a lot of reasoning

Yup. I have no dogs currently, but they are heck on trees, of which I have precious few on my ranchito in the Panhandle. I have trees the porcupines have eaten the bark off of, and between them and drought, the trees aren't winning. So yes, I kill every porky I see. I also kill every rattler and coon I see as well.

OK. I can see that. We don't have any porcupines, and I had figured they were as harmless as a opossum. We've got trees to spare, but if I didn't have many trees, I'd probably be shooting them too.

They can make a hard headed dog miserable pretty quick....

Yeah guys, I knew it was a porcupine. We do have them out there. That pose when the camera caught it makes it look really creepy. Even the buck seems to be saying, “WTF is that thing… I’m outta here!”

My grandpa told me to never kill porcupines because they're the only wild animal here in Texas that will come up to you. If you were lost in the woods and needed food, they'd be there for you.

owners of one lease i was on she said do not shoot the porcupines, later he told me to shoot them all if I could. Years later after a $350 vet bill for quill removal from her dog she said kill all of them if I could. That place had plenty, have had as many as 5 at one feeder eating corn at one time.
