If a dog gets bitten anywhere on the head it’s probably going to be ok. Anywhere else and you have a real problem.

We don’t have many copperheads where I hunt and live, no cottonmouths….but I’m in rattlebug central!

I feel like it’s only a matter of time before one of my dogs gets bit.

Every lab I have ever had (3) has been bitten by a cottonmouth. always while training in summer time. Dang snakes will swim across water and bite the dog. Luckily they all recovered fine. None had the vaccine, not sure there even was one back in those days.

2 of my last 3 dogs have been bitten. The younger of the two I have now got bit last summer. Still had the holes in his neck when I took him to Wayne’s for snake avoidance. He was pretty cautious around the snakes. My buddy brought two that same day and one of his was also recovering from a recent bite. I work around them and hunt around them frequently. I’m only scared of them if they are close enough to be dangerous. I got in a tight spot with a big timber rattler in a briar patch at work about 15 years ago.

Edit to add more detail: I think it was 2006. After Ike leveled Gilchrist the eye of that storm went north through Liberty county. I was crawling through a stand of log timber the storm had jackstrawed like pixie sticks to determine if it could be salvaged. Tops and logs were Willy Nilly every which way and I was shoe horned down in it. Quarters were too tight to turn and run. When I got up on the snake, I had no choice but to stand and fight.
I got bit on the soles of both boots a total of five times before I had him stomped down under my feet where he couldn’t bite at me and I could disengage and get away from him. He was biting at me and I was stomping him down. Did not penetrate my boot soles. He never rattled but at some point I did stomp all 13 of his rattles off. Happened so fast I was busy defending myself that I did not have time to get scared. After it was over I told my buddy that was with me “I almost got bit”. He told me “you just got bit 5 times. He just didn’t get his teeth in you”. That shook me up. The next morning both of my hamstrings were so tight and sore I could barely get out of bed.
