I've never been to Kansas before but I've seen the results of hunts by friends & neighbors. As a Texas resident, how would I go about finding a place to rifle hunt in Kansas next year?

Thanks!

There are leases available up there just like here or hire an outfitter. For nonresidents you have to put in for the draw for muzzleloader, archery and rifle in a specific region. Also one thing about the muzzleloader tag, if you don't shoot in during that season you can go back during rifle season using the muzzleloader to hunt deer. I think the draw opens up in April.

Just got back from Western Kansas. The herd populations was terrible. I have hunted there for over 20 years and this is the worse I have seen it. There were three of us with "Any Deer" tags and no one even got a shot off. In the 6 days we were there we saw what we would normally see in the first 2-3 hours of the first day. Hunted pheasant as well and only flushed 4 hens, no roosters and one prairie chicken. Didn't even hear a coyote yelp. The drought had taken it's toll of the farmers and wildlife. It was quite worrisome to experience this and CWD is running rampant in the NW counties. There is an abundance of public hunting and WAHA land that can be hunted. Several owners of land will let you hunt just for the asking as most farmers hate deer. It is the opposite of what you see in most other states. We hunt over 12,000 acres but the numbers were definitely not there this year!

Without being able to do any scouting, how would I go about finding farmers that favorable to hunters? Hopefully, the drought conditions improve.

Get on the phone and cold call.

In a normal year I bird hunt a lot of WIHA ground in NW and NC KS. I normally see a lot more deer than I do birds. It's become a running joke with my bird hunting buddy that we need to change what we hunt.

I knew full well about the conditions when I went up there a few weeks ago, but can attest to what M1 said earlier. Very few birds and not nearly as many deer. Cover very sparse.

What are the best areas to hunt? Can anyone give me a region?

colt45 is correct. The owners get calls all the time. It is as easy for them to say no as it is for you to call them. You need to talk to them in person. A lot can be learned in a face to face meeting.

Yup, and south central too. I have a lot of good memories I made in Cowley County, just SE of Wichita.

Are you hard set on rifle? It can be a zoo up there during rifle. I have a lifetime license in Kansas and only bow hunt it, I hunt mostly public land and it can be super good during archery. I hunt the SE area and there are some great public land places. I can show you some great hunting areas but I'm not sure how hard it gets hit during rifle. Muzzleloader might be a better option if your not a bow hunter.

Agree with this. I've hunted Kansas since 2006 and bow season is the best time to be there (week of the 14th is my pick). The rifle season doesn't begin until the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, which in most years is two weeks after peak rut. And as has been mentioned, things can get a little western when the orange armies hit the woods.
