I got a bunch done around the place yesterday and rewarded myself with some "me time" alone in the Almighty's handiwork on this earth in the evening. He never disappoints...
I've been watching a young buck that I've named "Brow Tine" on game cams that's got some real potential (providing my neighbors don't shoot his lips off beforehand) but I hadn't seen him "in the flesh" until today. He was crossing a flat a hundred yards or so from me and walking slowly, but determinedly, north. Until I grunted at him, that is. His head came up and he squared around in my direction with an "Oh no, you DIDN'T" look on his face. And he started straight for me, looking for a rival to whip! He passed within 20 steps of me.
Not today, mi amigo. Vaya con Dios...
A short time later, I spotted a bit of movement 200 yards south of me. Oh, Lord...a porcupine! The porcupine is my spirit animal. We're both prickly and messing with us may not end well for you. Of course, we're also both tubby, slow and near-sighted. We can't all be Tom Selleck, I guess... I walked down to visit with my friend and get some snaps, but I was rapidly losing the light. Video to the rescue! I was within 6-7 feet of him...can you tell when he realized that he wasn't alone?
Thank you, Lord, for these reminders of your perfection that you've created here for us: pray we never forget who is the Master in this world.
That first cam photo was from back before the rut started, yet he looks half stove up. Seeing him yesterday "on the hoof" makes me think he's younger (despite being hollow-flanked and jerked down from chasing the girls)!
I see porcupines here 2-3 times per year so it's not like I'm tripping over them, but they ain't all that scarce...

pretty buck ... about 8-9 years ago, I was sitting in a blind in northern Burnet county and started hearing something, got to trying to figure out what it was, it was a porcupine. He walked within 10 feet of my stand and waddled on up to my feeder. I saw it 3 or 4 more times during that deer season as he had found all my feeders across the ranch and check them all out. Pretty cool to see one in person, especially in central Texas.

I've gotten game cam pics of one that came into a feeder in the middle of the night, ate his fill, and then fell SOUND ASLEEP directly under the feeder. According to the time stamp, he was snoozing a couple of hours before getting to his feet and waddling off on his merry way...

Game cams have definitely been a game changer. I remember the early models that had 35mm cameras in them and we had to take the film to get developed. The pics of limbs moving in the wind REALLY sucked back then.
