We have 2 dogs. A lab mix and a chihuahua. Adopted the large one at two years old about 7 years ago. Have had the little one since 6 weeks old, 5 years ago. They’ve always been fine but today the large one bit the wife’s chihuahua and the result was surgery and loss of an eye. As they haven’t had any issues prior we’re back and forth on what to do with the older large dog. What route would y’all go? The older dog hasn’t slowed down any with age and has been a great family dog. Has typically been protective of the little one. Nobody was inside the house at the time so we don’t know exactly what happened. Best we can imagine is they were playing and the little ones head ended up in the big ones mouth as that commonly happens when they are roughing around.

chihuahua obviously started it and big dog finished it. Sounds like they worked it out. I bet they will be fine going forward

My sons dog attacked one of our dogs and he had to get stitches, but they have been fine for the last couple of years.

I’d chalk it up to the little one writing a check his azz couldn’t cash.

Little one has never been aggressive at all other than when she’s eating. Taking into account the chihuahua factor, she’s strangely one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever had or been around, and has always been a scared, easily dominated dog when around other dogs, people as well.
Will never know what happened but I have a hard time believing that she started it after having them both for so long.
Only situation would be the old one got tired of playing and the chihuahua bit her ear, which is sensitive to the large one.

Great joke, when people are trying to decide whether or not to euthanize a family pet if it poses a threat!

Could the little dog have startled the big dog and got a bad snap? Have you had the lab checked to see if there could be something medically wrong with it causing it to snap at the little dog? More than likely it won't happen again.

I am sorry for your dog's pain. It really sucks, especially since they seem to be good friends prior to this. My dogs would snap at each other the older they got, especially if they were in pain, or startled after going deaf/losing their sight.

Hope the little one pulls through fine.

I wouldnt be so quick to assume it was a bite or attack. When I was in high school we had a Lab and a smaller mixed breed. They were playing a little rough one day and the Lab put the little dogs eye out with a claw. Lab was not being aggressive at all. It was just one of those things where they were playing a little too rough and one of them got hurt just like kids on a play ground.

Highly doubt it was startled as they were in the same room for awhile and while older for a big dog she’s very aware and almost never gets startled. She has no issues that we are aware of, perfect hearing and eyesight. She’s getting a check up tomorrow though.

It was a bite, punctured in the middle of the lower jaw, just a flesh wound and part of why we believe it wasn’t an attack, just an accident while playing.

There is no pattern of bad behavior, no dots to connect, there was one incident and even that one you do not know what happen. So there is really nothing to act on. So do nothing at this point but watch them. Maybe it was just an accident.

I know it’s stressful when you love both dogs, just let it work its self out and don’t over think it or jump to conclusions.

Exactly Buzz, nobody should buy a chihuahua in the first place.

That's a good looking retriever your wife has. Didn't have you pegged as a Maltese person.

I hate to agree with people online, but. The little dog being food aggressive is your clue. Food aggression that can't be cured with minimal effort is grounds for a cull because of what tend to happen then and otherwise.

Assuming there are no tiny humans about, I'd look at it as the cost of dealing with non-purpose-bred dogs and carry on.

If you believe it was an accident, then why are you trying to decide whether or not to euthanize?

Had a black lab and a wiener dog for a while. They were best friends. One day the wiener dog was jumping and playing and licking the labs mouth. Next second the lab was shaking the wiener dog like a rag doll. Only happened that one time. We were all sitting in the living room together when it happened. No clue why she did it. A few vet bills later the wiener dog was right in her face again. She never did anything to him again.
