My mother had a file like this - contained a book with questions regarding all of these things. I was excited when I saw it. Then I looked closer and realized it was totally blank. Oh well, I handled her whole funeral and I think it turned out like she would have liked it.

My wife's oldest brother is in ICU in a Ft Worth hospital. He has no wife or kids, just siblings. He says his affairs are in order and his attorney has everything. Only problem is no one knows who his attorney is! He just say's his attorney will take care of everything but refuses to give any details.

There are a number of things that you can do to lessen the probate issues, most especially if you only have one child. An Enhanced Life Estate Deed (Lady Bird Deed) avoids probate. At midnight of your passing the home is his or hers, automatically cut and dried. You can have Pay on Death forms in place at banks, brokerage firms, auto and boat titles, etc. All of this can bypass probate.
I think a will is a good idea just in case anything was overlooked, but this speeds things up for what matters most.
EDIT: Don't fall for the free fill in the blank Ladybird Deeds. Don't fall for the $19.95 ones either. Consult a title company and get a referral to an attorney that they will accept this deed from and insure title, (title policy). Been there done that. Meaning I ran the free download and the $19.95 one by them to start with. He "X'd" both of them and told me to quick jacking around and sent me to his preferred attorney." If I wasn't a Realtor I might not have thought to do this. $600 later it was done.
