Seen bucks chasing and partnered with does the last two days here in Young Co so figured I would do some rattling this morning. These two guys came running in to see what the commotion was. Third time I’ve rattled in stags, definitely more curious than whitetail. They don’t come in angry. The 6x6 on the left would be a nice shooter but he broke off an eye guard during the rut in October so we are giving him a pass this year.

These are free range and have been in the area for several decades. Originally brought in on the ranch south of us as a 3/4 Red Deer, 1/4 Elk hybrid.

My ex BIL has a ranch south of Graham and I use to see them running around periodically, that was 10 + years ago.

Pretty neat having them hang around.

3/4 and 1/4. Had no idea that different species could do that.

Elk and Red Deer, while recognized as different species now, were long thought of as the same animal and can readily interbreed. I’m not sure why that mix was originally brought in, if it was desired or just what our neighbor could access at the time.

Red deer and elk crosses are more common than some might think on high fence places.

They mix with sika too. Some places claim they have pure breeds. With all of them on the same HF, I wonder.

That broadside was perfect. The anticipation of the BOOM was great.

Very cool!!

But, if the stags are free to kill, the one on the left would have been in my ice chest shortly after you made this video broken brow or not!!!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Yep I hear you and I thought about it too. Adds on to the fact that I haven’t taken a big stag too (my dad has taken a couple). I passed on this guy last year when he was a big thick 5x5 and I’ve just got it in my mind that I want him to be perfect. Also know this may be the last time I ever see him. Whether I pull the trigger or it’s a death of natural causes, I live for the fact that we were able to create an environment, manage a herd, and provide the opportunity for guys like this to even be hunted. So this video and the memory is a trophy enough for me
