Ok guys I have a question. We’re taking my grandson hunting in December, he’s ok with shooting his bolt action scoped 22. However, for deer we need to step him up, we’re thinking the 22-250 would work because of the light recoil. I’ve only used it for coyotes and it does a number on those varmints. Just wonder if it’s enough caliber for a doe deer?

Just use a well constructed bullet like a combined technology or something bonded and it will be fine.

I don’t think any deer have ever been killed with a 22-250. The bullet will bounce off.

Better shoot them with a 338 mag to defeat the armor.

I’ve shot a lot of wt and axis with one and it worked excellent. The furthest I had one run was with a “deer” bullet.

Started my wife out on a 222. Then Grandson got it and killed deer and hogs. He also outgrew it and it’s now waiting for the next generation.

But, that next gen was me following some gut surgery. I used it and it now still sits waiting for the next kid or my next surgery. It uses the same lead as a 223 and lots of people use them. It’s all about shot placement.

Shot my share of deer with a .22-250. Always neck shot them with the 55 grain v-max.

Switched to the fusion and had a couple of body shot kills they went nicely. Popped one behind the shoulder and the doe ran forever (over 200 yards ). Was still alive when we walked up to it ( two thf members were witness to this)

moved back to the 55 grain v-max after that.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Love the v max in a 22-250, leaves a nasty hole.

If you have the twist rate for it try the Hornady 75gr open tip match boat tail. It is the most devastating 22 bore bullet that I have ever found.

My son shot his first 3 deer with a .223WSM with a standard cup and core bullet (winchester superX). I would have preferred a stouter bullet, but it's what we had available, and it worked superbly. Similar ballistics to the 22-250.

I grew up shooting the Sierra 63gr SP in an old Ruger I had but they were hand loads. I now load the same bullets for my oldest boy's VLS 22-250.
I've also killed a couple with the factory Winchester 55gr PSP.
The 22-250 I got my wife really likes the Sierra 55gr Spitzers. Haven't killed a deer with those but a couple of hogs either shot in the head or the neck right in front of the shoulder.

22-250 is wicked..
My dad's main rifle since the early 60s, killed 18 deer it's first year (did deer eradication for a farm)
Handloaded 63g Sierras for the longest time.
He passed 10 years ago and I was waiting for "the right time" to take it out of the safe.
That was a few weeks ago, I had a few boxes of Nosler 55g Ballstic tips, 200 yard clover leaf group.

Shot a few does, all from 150 - 200 yards. upper neck shot, white patch and lights out!
My dad's favorite trick was a whistle and they just freeze and look at you, that white patch makes a perfect target.
They just dropped in the scope to speak..

That's right. My Dad loved the 22-250 in the neck patch too. Killed many a S Texas bucks that way.

When my savage was in its original 22-250, my brother used to shoot this winchester 40gr ammo that showed 4000fps on box. It was a 26" barrel so it might get close. He used to take down east texas deer. Bullet would just explode and do weird things but it was relatively affective. I'd say he must have taken at least 3-4, 2 i've seen, probably all 50-150yds.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

Had any exits? They did great for us otherwise, but the offside hide caught the two we've used.

It be had exits with 53gr Barnes TSX

If the twist were better in the 22-250 there are some better 70+ gr bullets that pack a whoop.

I think rifle makers will start transitioning .22-250 barrels to a 1:8 twist.

It makes the .22-250 into a whole other animal. Same goes for the .223 Rem.

Ya I just bought a tikka in 223 1/8 to play with the 77TMK ‘s .

Probably put my 22-250 up for sale soon if I like the 223 1/8

Did you see how the Tikka Varmint .223 Judd had, then Tim had shot?

Range record 200 yard 3 shot group. And that's saying something since I've had some real high dollar customs come through.

Some exit, some don't. Just depends on the shot. I don't care about exits though. up

No I just got the stainless T3 light. Once I get it threaded I’ll be out at your place slinging. I need to see if I can get my daughter shooting far enough to take her mule deer hunting. I figured more better gun to let her send a 100rds down range with
