Anyone ever used on of these? Specs say they can't lift their tail to spray, but unsure of placing the trap in the back of my SUV to drive it away. I don't think my neighbors would like to see me outright shoot the thing in a wire cage trap, so looking for options. I understand the range of comments that will be forthcoming, but seriously, if you have ever used one of these things, please give me your opinion....thanks.

We shoot possums with 22 shorts caught in our live traps. One shot, neighbors don't have to know anything.

I wouldn't put that inside a vehicle. Our big Pyrenees/German Shephard mix got skunked one night last week. She typically is in the house at night. It wasn't going to be convenient last week to bathe her for a few days, so I put her in my shop at night. The shop has OSB siding and I think that siding absorbed the smell. The smell is only now starting to dissipate.

Small wire cage trap with a sheet over it. Use a barrel or maybe an old cooler filed with water to dispatch. (or neighbors pool) peep

A recycling bin works for the water bath, or trash can. No spray when drowned, usually. Just pour the water down the curb.
Small live trap covered works well too, spouse has removed 3 skunks from our backyard in town via this method, no sprays.

Pick up the trap carefully, lol.

I have caught more than a dozen skunks in my life. Take a garbage can or empty barrel put a skunk sized trap inside with part of a can of tuna just before dark. Sprinkle a little tuna juice and meat from outside to in, remainder of can in back of the trap. In the morning when the skunk is in the trap, tip the barrel up and place a running hose in the barrel. I have never been sprayed once, after barrel is overflowing shut water off. I usually wait a few more minutes and then skin. Winter skunk pelts are much fuller and nicer than summer. No stink whatsoever. also works for feral cats and racoons when I was back on the farm... GL

Do not buy that expecting to be able to put it in a SUV without skunking it up.

Would there be any reason to keep it around, any benefits?

I'm sorry I've killed plenty of skunks in my life with rimfire rifles....but intentionally drowning one is animal cruelty, plain and simple.

Sorry but they die quite quickly as their smaller lungs are overwhelmed by the water. Cruel would be looking at your face before you shoot it. stir

So your moral high ground consists of you shooting them with a 22?

Some States and I don't know about Texas or Federal laws, don't view drowning as an acceptable method of euthanasia and make it illegal or fall under animal cruelty law. At the same time with trapping, the use of drowning locks has been and still is commonplace in in many areas. http://www.trapperman.com/trapperman/drowning_setup.html .
It would be advisable to be careful what one posts on the world wide web or how you go about such things without researching what is legal for your area. There are practices that acceptable in a hunting or trapping situation, that are not in an urban area. Just part of the screwed up world we live in.

"The Texas Euthanasia Act of 2003 banned animal shelters from drowning". So as long as it was before 2003. And that was an animal shelter thing. I only saw the headline and again have no idea the laws here, but as long as what was talked about happened before 2003, I bet he has nothing to worry about.

Some folks just don't have the stomach for certain methods, even if that method is cleaner than shooting them a couple times with a 22 because you missed the brain.

Exterminator has been contacted, he uses the no spray traps and releases. No way would we use the water method and I'm not at ease shooting it through a metal cage. It is making a mess of our yard, digging for food.....

Get a heavy dose of grub killer down now and in the spring. That's what the skunks are looking for. If you don't kill the bugs, anther one will just come along and take his place.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

You sure it's a skunk and not an armadillo? You need to get rid of whatever it is if it's tearing the yard up. An armadillo would be far less problematic.
