Ranch hand found it, he didn’t open the gate or call anyone. Shot it right after taking the photo. No, this is not a trophy deer for the ranch.

Shoot. You might get yourself hurt otherwise. 'Been there, too many times, but not a boy that big.

Had a doe with twins get caught one time. We somehow got them out without too much damage.

Call the Game Warden. You can’t
shoot that deer.

Being behind that hog panel gives you some protection, but even if you saw an antler, he is still liable to kill/hurt himself by the time he gets turned around. If he hasn't already. I have had a few slam into the cage and drop dead right there. But then we have released bucks before. But count on a few bruises and a busted mouth. Nothing about letting a deer from a trap is pleasant.
I had a doe get her head stuck through the mesh once, she froze and just stood there. I opened the cage and helped get her head squeezed back through and she turned and ran. Lucky day for her.
We have open top traps now, they hop right out.

You don't necessarily have to shoot a buck hung up in wire or hung up with another buck. You just need to carry around a pair of bolt cutters and trim away what you can until he breaks loose. I just did this very thing Nov. 15 when two bucks hung up by fighting. One was dead and the other very weak. There was two of us working . We were able to trim until he broke loose. I have done this one other time about two years ago when two 10 pointers hung up..one was dead because coyotes ate him up. There was two of us handling the two bucks which you may need. I don't think I could have done this without help. Sometimes you may have to use a rope to take him down so you can do your trimming. This can be very dangerous ..don't take any chances as we didn't as we were very careful and like I said one of them was very weak and the other was dead in both cases. I wouldn't take this on with two bucks full of energy and strength. With one in a hog trap I would give it a try first.

I would have given him a shot of Rompun and sawed his antlers off. Easy peasy. Get a couple of folks and you don't need the drugs. A few years back driving from Kerrville to Harper me and a couple of buddies saw a good buck with his antlers stuck in a roll of old fence. We cut his antlers off and let him go. Probably got shot the next year.

I have done this as well. One dead buck, the other one very weak. We found the freed buck dead a week later.
Also I was told to not cut the antler off at the base, cut tines or further up the main beam till they are free. It is easier to cut tines quickly and if the buck survives he can still shed the antler okay.

I don’t use hog traps anymore. I’ve seen that more than once that has generally resulted in a broken neck.
