Helping dad out by feeding the cows today.. As I’m coming back to park the tractor, I see a UPS truck but it looks like it’s in the pasture instead of the driveway.. Yea, it sure is.. The driver said “I didn’t want to move the trash cans blocking the driveway, so I thought I’d just pull in the pasture entry enough to get off the street…..” eek2

He was very apologetic and thankful that someone was around.. He said calling for a tow truck automatically counts as an accident at UPS.

And too dumb to know, that laziness is going to cause 100X more time and effort than moving the trash can would have.

Lmao.

Yep, stuck in mud is coded as an accident for a reason.

Sorry, yea.. I pulled him out with the little 45.. He’s asking me as I’m putting a chain on his truck “Should I just leave it in neutral?”..

No. Reverse would be helpful.. crazy

I would have told him to leave it in neutral.

Good on You for helping him (everyone messes up). I helped our newer UPS driver out of a couple of predicaments and we have become really good friends.

In his defense, atleast from the pics, it looks like that entrance was being used for an entrance as well….
The physics of wet dirt and street tires may have simply escaped him.

Why? It would just make it harder on T Bone to pull him out!

Good job T Bone helping that knuckle head driver that was either to lazy or stupid or both to move the trash cans up
So how big a pain in the rear was it to fix/smooth your dads pasture rd.?

Not necessarily. A lot of times that just makes it harder because they’re digging deeper as you pull them out.

You are probably right if he has it in reverse and is giving it to much gas and spinning the wheels, if he has it in reverse and either just let the engine idle push the wheels or very lightly give it gas where the wheels aren't spinning that should help back it out!

But then again I am not a tow truck driver and have only pulled a couple of vehicles out that were lightly stuck so I am no expert on the best practices or physics involved for sure up

It won’t be bad in another few days when it starts to dry out. If the top layer is soft, he’ll be able to drive on the ruts and smooth them out.

Another fun fact.. I had no idea those UPS trucks were front wheel drive-

I hope you retrieved your chain off the back deck of the truck.

Good for you on helping him. Was he planning on jumping that fence with the packages? They probably have had some training about not stopping in roads if at all possible and stopping to get out and move the trash can seemed like a bad idea to him. I don’t know about in your area but our UPS drivers bust their butts and wheeling a trash can out of the way would be one of the easiest things they do all day.

Driving into that mud seems like a horrible idea to me and probably everyone else on here who has spent time outdoors but you would be surprised how many people have no clue about that sort of thing. Middle aged people who have never used 4wd or been stuck in their lives because they have never left pavement.

Absolutely, it’s a 20’ heavy sucker..

I asked the driver a couple of times to attach the chain to his truck, I didn’t want to tear the guys bumper off.. but he didn’t really feel comfortable doing that. I wanted the chain to go on the rear axle/frame but it was so muddy I didn’t want to lay down in that stuff either. Fortunately, the bumper held… That rear platform is only bolted to the body..

Leaving a vehicle in neutrals that’s being towed or winched out from being stuck is typically the best option for a few reasons. Usually the person driving is flooring the vehicle which is just going to dig down deeper making the recovery harder, especially in a mud hole or sand. Shock load, which is when the stuck vehicle puts slack in the winch line or tow rope, then falls back into its hole, is terrible for the winch, and dangerous for everybody in the scenario because it can cause parts to come flying apart (remember what happened recent in Arizona?). Shock load also causes unnecessary stress on both vehicles mechanicals.

Now, given the scenario above, and the dense thinking of the UPS driver, I’d prefer he just leave it in neutral and for us on turning it out onto the street.

There’s obvious infinite scenarios, but in most cases the stuck vehicle should be in neutral.

7" in last 3 days here in Cedar Lane. Went out to fill feeders and the Polaris is struggling. 2-4" of standing water in the pastures.
