Gold Dot is what FWPD issues and I still use. I prefer the heavy of the two loads for shooting through car windows if needed.

Over the years, I've spoken to multiple officers and departments over ammo choices. Their choices often come down to budget and what options (or lack of) they have available. The Texas DPS were carrying Hornady Critical Defense ammo. There was a Shooting in Frisco where the DPS officer hit and stuck a large guy multiple times with the Horn CD ammo. He barracaded himself in and 15 hours later, was still ok. A friend of mine knew the officer involved in the shooting, and they were all disappointed in the performance over the lack of expansion and performance of the Hornady CD ammo. Everyone I spoke with said the same thing about the Gold Dot ammo. They all loved it and it performed the best overall.

But, I've also spoken to trauma surgeons in the ER. And they agree on one thing. It doesn't matter what caliber is used, it's what is hit. If you hit the right stuff, it won't matter.

124 Grain +P Speer Gold Dot or 127 Grain +P+ Winchester Ranger, depending on availability.

Like many on here I also prefer the Gold Dots.

Standard pressure 124 Grain 9mm is around 1100 fps, 124 Grain +P around 1200 fps, 124-127 +P+ around 1250 fps.

Some handguns are not rated for +P or +P+, please read and heed the warning labels.

Winchester Ranger LE 147gr--- In my off-duty I have also carried gold dots (NOT the 147s) and federal HST +P.

If you want to see some results of various 9mm the one stop shop is here:

Gotta agree Chad. Shot placement trumps penetration, etc.

I saw a notice that American Reloading had some pulled 9 mm 147 gr Speer bullets, the Gold Dot G2 that are black and have the elastomer in the hollow point.. Guessing the loaded ammo did not meet some spec. I picked up 1000 and worked up a load. Supposedly built to improve on the FBI barrier test. I was surprised how well they shot out to 100 yards given that they are typically loaded to around 950 fps out of service gun ( i.e. not a short barrel ). I ended up getting another 1K just because they shot so well. Not sure if any agency uses them though.

I like the .40 better than the 9, and the 180 Gold Dots are excellent in the .40.

I wish I read this before buying more Federal HST. I went to GT and bought a box to replace my +P but the box I bought is non +P. I held a box of the Speer Gold dot 115grn and was going to buy that.

What's wrong with HST's?
