I know the panhandle started a week ago, but today is the start where I've hunted them just a very few times. 'Miss that country, especially on this day.
Good luck to all that are out there!

Panhandle here. Not much action so far, but each passing day gets us closer to the rut.

Those big boys would get decimated as they are absolutely stupid trying to keep their harem together, walking around like they own the joint. But I usually see at least the beginning of rut interest in the last couple days of the season. There's always a chance.

The season ending before the rut is by design.
Guys who are MLD and looking for big deer hunt starting around Christmas into January, at least in the trans pecos
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

We've been MLD ground for 6 years now. The rut in W Andrews/Gaines/Winkler/Ward counties starts about the 10th of December. Odds for bomber bucks does get better of course, but it's not like you can show up and pick one out. Big bucks are big bucks, and are very smart. Very low densities as well.

Did y’all start shooting better bucks during the MLD season? My buddy has a place in marathon and before MLD a 160’s was a good shooter buck. After they got on MLD they started shooting deer in the 180’s they never saw during the 16 day general season

We usually see the biggest bucks during December, but not always. The three biggest we've ever seen were the weekend before Thanksgiving, and the last weekend in January. We killed several 190" bucks right before Thanksgiving, and one 202" buck during the same timeframe. We have only seen the very biggest bucks once no matter what the timeframe. I've got so many stories of what huge bucks have done it would blow the mind's of those who think big muley bucks are dumb.
We have actually killed much older bucks after we got enrolled in MLD, no necessarily the biggest.

I can’t speak for big Muley bucks as I’ve gotten duped by two and almost got duped by a third, but I’ll be the first to say the average mule deer ain’t that bright compared to a whitetail

Lot's of people have that opinion. I guess it depends on what "average" is and where you're hunting. I've never found an "average" whitetail to be very hard to kill personally.

Ha! Maybe we can make that happen one day Bobo. Sounds like lots of fun to me. The lingering drought has made it tough on us the last few years though.

It’s not just mule deer, my WT lease probably would have lost half our Buck population this Jan/Feb if we didn’t get last few rains to get the wheat up.
