What is this? Just a color phase bird or a hybrid? Can’t distinguish any other duck coloration or features in there. Came in by itself to finish out another teal shoot.

My guess would be a Brewer's Duck...MallardXGadwall hybrid.

Farm duck/ wild mallard cross. I want one SO SO BAD now. I shot 4 in one season, didnt save a single one. I did a bunch of research on this and was told from multiple sources this is what it is. Definitely not a brewers. Just some wild ones that got in with some pen raised birds. But now that I want to put a mallard and a pintail next to the hybrid, i want an odd ball mallard, not just some regular mallard. Awesome bird!! Will try and see if I can find pics of the ones I shot a few seasons ago.

Not sure why the photos turned out sideways, but if you notice, no white bars on any of the ducks that year. For some reason, we had them around. Since that year (2018), I haven't killed another no white bar. Yours is really cool because its even missing the brown in the chest.

This is a long shot, and don't think this is going on with your bird because of the yellow bill, but there are times when ducks can become injured and hens can start to produce testosterone and the feather color comes through as a drake. We killed a mallard a couple years ago that had green head, orange bill (hen) and had the wing speculum of a hen. The head was all green though just like a drake. Come to find out with age or injury, the hen can start to overproduce testosterone and less estrogen and mulch new feathers that look like a drake.

Thanks for the replies, nice birds flashman. Shot my fair share of green heads but never anything outside of normal. Farm duck makes sense, it didn’t have very many smarts, surprised the mutt made it this long
