Having taken a mature buck this past weekend, I regard my situation from here on out as more like, bonus time where I can look to harvest an absolute wall hanger. If that doesn't happen, it will still be a successful season. Do any of you all with a mature one down regard the upcoming field time similarly?

I hunt 2 different counties, Young and Throckmorton. Have taken one mature in Throckmorton and open to chasing a Booner in either county at this point.

Seems the first is counterproductive to the second unless truly at the peak or post mature.

DQ is correct , Throckmorton county is a 2 buck county of any kind and Young county only allows one 13 inch spread are larger and one spike. If I was in his shoes that’s what I would be doing as well . Congratulations on the nice buck in Throckmorton. Still hunting my trophy in Young county . Passed on a nice 10 earlier due to ageing him at only 4 1/2 . It’s been a tuff one this year where we hunt but will give it a go for the Thanksgiving weekend.

You know everybody will be different on this cause so many situations are different.
If I kill a buck it will be a very big one or nothing and usually it’s nothing cause I set my goals very high. So if I kill one opening day I’m done buck hunting. I will hunt/scout with my camera for others and for future and cause that’s just what I do.
Great buck DQ and good luck on a big bigun,

My ranch is 2/3rds HF now, going to HF the remaining 1/3rd in March. So me and the other guy that hunts with me will let all good bucks pass and only shoot management type bucks this year.

100 percent my philosophy. I will take out selective culls that I see through the season and a doe or two.

It's just my wife and myself so we like to have maybe 3 deer in the freezer for the year, with the thought that I will get an opportunity for additional meat like axis deer etc... So having taken my good buck for the year during archery only season, this week she will try to get a buck and a doe with her crossbow, if not I may have to hope for a spike to come by. But the pressure was off after that first buck for sure.

I'm so different than I used to be DQ. I used to hunt hard as hell, especially if I had a target deer for a client or even myself. Now, I just enjoy each and every hunt and do more looking than anything else. I enjoy finding em for other people more now than killing them myself.

But to me the all important thing is to shoot old deer and or inferior ones of an age class. I like the weird and different ones more than anything....and big 6s, 7s, & 8s! I have 3 different 8s on teh wall from mid to upper 40s and really, really want one in the 50s. I also have dreams of a 135" slick 6! roflmao

I like your thought process though and on the place where you can kill 2 of your choice, I would also be looking for the monster! But I also wouldn't pass up a great cull either. lol

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

After 12 years of hunting my 20 acres, I got a nice bruiser last season. It kind of slowed me down now. I can go get a big buck down south but last year's buck was goal reached. I've been hunting a lot with my father this year and we will hunt as much as he wants.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Axis bucks, whitetail does and hogs are pretty much all I target. I haven't shot a WT buck other than a spike in about 10 years. It would have to be an exceptional buck for me to pull the trigger.

We think exactly the same, unless it’s an absolute giant I’m not to concerned with hunting it. It takes a really big deer to even get me excited these days unless it’s a freak. I shot an ignorant seven year old 6 point early this year and I was more pumped up about that one than the last 160” deer I shot. I know a few guys on here are in the same boat and only hunt big deer so after a lifetime of killing nice deer it gets uneventful to hunt anything other than big mature deer for me. I’m still trying to break the 200” mark and I may die before it happens but I’ve got one scaring the low 90”s now I’d take this year but other than that I’ll stay off the trigger.

I get more into locating a deer for my wife or dad than myself now and when they get one I feel like a 10 year old on opening morning all over again, I guess we change as we get older roflmao
