Thinking about loading up some subs for my .308 for my daughter
Anyone have experience with them on behind the shoulder shots on deer at 50 yards and under?
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Heard enough bad tales around here, pertaining to hog hunting that I would not try it on whitetail.

No. If she's not ready to shoot a well-suited short action, maybe just wait a year.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I've shot several hogs behind the shoulder with the Hornady Sub-X loads in 300BO. They all died but most ran a good ways without too much in blood trail. I wouldn't trust them on a game animal. I think you made the right decision.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I shoot Maker Rex 30 cal bullets and they will run a little before dropping. Tens of thousands of deer are killed with arrows every year in Texas too. I get more internal damage from the Rex bullets than I’ve ever gotten with a broad head. The external bleeding is better with a broad head though so blood tracking is easier using a bow. A bullet designed to expand at subsonic velocity will kill them but they will not instantly drop from the hydrostatic shock of a supersonic bullet. That’s been my experience and I’ve killed a lot of large animals with subs.

I have shot close to 20 whitetails with managed recoil rounds in a 300 win mag and a 30-06. Never had a deer take more that a couple of steps.
Hogs are a completely different animal (pun intended). I messed around with a few versions of managed recoil until I found one that was grouped with my full load. I use Remington 150 g managed recoil and Hornady 200g ELD-X. The managed recoil are about 1.5 inches lower than the ELD-X. I load three ELD-X first and then one Managed recoil in the chamber. IF a pig shows up that I want to kill AND recover...I quietly pull the managed recoil and slip the ELD-X in place. I shot the managed recoil to reduce meat loss as the recoil doesn't bother me. I also have the three ELD-X in the clip just in case I need a follow-up.

We set up a 308 a couple years ago with a suppressor and some sub sonic loads. I could see the bullet through my spotting scope down range. Shot 2 doe and had to get a dog to find them.
