Are there certain things you, your hunting group or family does before or on opening weekend, like grow beards or cook certain foods, gather at a certain place or?
Are there certain foods that are a tradition with your group for opening weekend like grilling steak, chili, smoking certain meats or??

What about your holidays, do you meet at a certain persons house like your parents or vacation house!

I grew up hunting in South Texas with grandfather, dad, uncles, and cousins.

My uncle was making some chili and threw in a can of corn, i guess he just had some so threw it in there. My cousin said it looked like it came from a gutshot deer with the corn in there.

From then on it was gutshot chili, always had to add a can of corn. Deer camp was called camp gutshot from then on.

ā€œGutshot Chiliā€, thereā€™s a great memory. As for us, it was ā€œthe kill drinkā€, which was Bourbon. Kill a deer and weā€™d have the drink at the skinning tree. That was the evening kill drink always, and sometimes the morning kill drink.

When I was in high school and college we had our Thanksgiving meal at noon. Afterward, we hit the woods for a couple of days. Then for many years I worked on Thanksgiving. But this year we're hunting early Thanksgiving morning and then will spend the remainder of the day at my oldest son's house.

How times have changed.

When I was younger opening weekend was a drunk fest, build a big fire and when hunting if it was brown it was down, food was just that an after thought..
Thank goodness things are a lot more tame now. still have fun and drinks, certainly eat and sleep heck of a lot better grin
