The grizzly bear population took a big hit when the buffalo left the landscape….they were a major food source for the bears.

The Davis mountain bear incident did in fact happen, but it’s likely that the bear came north from Mexico rather than down out of the Rockies.

John Means’ great (great, great) grand kids used to work for me. They tell me that the family only loaned the skull to the Smithsonian as long as they promised to return it after cataloguing, testing, etc. When they asked for it back, like a year later, the Smithsonian basically told him to go F himself.

The day the last grizzly was killed in CO, I was 10 miles as crow flies from it. Really crazy to think about. Especially it was determined that bear had had cubs at one time.

I remember reading that the sow had never had cubs, which meant it was a truly isolated individual.

Personally, I don’t believe the guys story. I think he shot and wounded the bear and it died on top of him, sort of like the revenant.

I don’t care how strong a person is they cannot run a arrow tipped with a bear razor head deep enough into a bears neck to hit the jugular.

I want to believe it.

Adrenaline makes one considerably stronger for a time. I'm not saying I believe the story. I'm saying strength depends on the situation.

I thought the same thing….until I got to handle a bear (a black bear at that) and saw how thick their necks and skin are.

They are designed to be able to take claw swipes and fangs….from considerably more force than any human can muster.

A heavy tang fixed blade knife, if everything lined up just right…..maybe….maybe and that would include that weight of a falling bear playing a role. But not an aluminum or wood arrow.

I read later that it showed she did have cubs, also a meat eater pod cast on it.

I think they wounded it thinking it was a blk(brown/cinnamon phase) bear and went to recovery and became a bad deal. At that time grizzly were thought to be extinct. Think she was only like 200-250lbs
