Picar. Not imported anymore but a scope from 50s or 60s is amazing.

Leupold has one too. I had to draw this out for someone, in May, after I got done with their rifle.

I thought th hash marks were supposed to line up with corresponding 200, 300, and 400 yards? Whoever did those loads must have screwed up. peep

Well, one of em does.

Clearly the guy that made that ammo has it running faster than Leupold had planned.

Leupold instructions show you how to calibrate using power ring and it’s works pretty well. I have done it several times with their Varmint reticle with flatter shooting calibers.
Basically you use a tall target at max distance say 500 yds use main crosshair to fire 3 shot group it will drop to bottom of target of course. Make a horizontal line visible thru scope across the center of group.
Then simply aim rifle at original point of aim and change you scopepower ring until 500 yard stadia line lines up with group.
If it’s shooting too flat then only option is to change sight in distance to match.

The iStrelok app is very helpful. Find your reticle, adjust the power to where you normally keep it on your rifle, and it’ll tell you all the BDC line distances. I rarely use BDC any more, but the app is worth having.

I'm not messing with it.

I've got a Kestrel 5700 with Elite ballistics and steel targets every hundred yards. Mil or MOA and I'll get it nailed down perfect. These dumb BDC type reticles, I'm going to crank it to max, shoot the distances and draw them a picture.

Then explain if it were Mil or MOA how much easier it would be to dial or hold for gravity. Up to them to swap scopes or not.

I understand what you are saying, but not everyone wants to do what you do. As for BDC, what I really dislike is having to crank the scope to max power just to get the BDC lines ‘correct’. Max power doesn’t work for me when hunting. With that iStrelok app, I can see what distances the lines are at my usual power setting and the reticle on my scopes. But, like I said, I rarely use BDC lines any more. Last time was a couple of years ago. I only mentioned it because some folks might want to know there’s a way to see what distances the lines are good for at less than max magnification.

They don't want to do what I do.

Then I read a paragraph of all the steps that are a pain in the azz using BDC reticles, at various magnification settings and an app. Yeah, that's fast in the field. rolleyes

If someone held me at gun point and forced me to buy a Leupold, I’d go Vx5 or higher. I would steer clear of anything lower quality.

I don't recall the last time I had anything to say here about scopes, but I do know that at the time I had Leupold scopes on every one of my rifles. I started with the Vari-X IIs 30 or so years ago (but I did own other scopes on a few rifles before then) and eventually ended up with mostly VX-3s and -3i models and several VX-5s. I was always very satisfied with everything about Leupold scopes except for the damned adjustments flat-out SUCKING. About five tears ago I started off loading my Leupolds and trying other stuff--some of which was out of production long before I ever tried them. Bear in mind I have NO interest in twisting turrets or long-range shooting, and my preferences show my bias...I prefer a simple duplex reticle or sometimes a "ballistic" reticle (I find busy reticles to be distracting).

These are my impressions on most of what I've tried lately:

Weaver Grand Slam - good glass and good adjustments
Weaver Super Slam - great scopes with very nice glass, adjustments work
Bushnell Nitro - not awful, but glass is rather mediocre
Sightron Big Sky - very nice glass, adjustments work
Sightron SII - okay glass, adjustments work
NIghtforce SHV - very nice glass, just didn't care for the reticle
Meopta Optika5 - very nice glass and good adjustments
SWFA 20x - I found this one unusable, but I suspect my vision might have something to do with that
SWFA 10x - nice glass, but just wasn't versatile enough for my uses
Sightron S-TAC - just too damned big for a sporter rifle IMO but nice glass with good adjustments
Weaver's new "Classic" line - adjustments work but pretty weak on glass
Burris Fullfield II - okay glass and adjustments seem to work
Tract Response - pretty nice glass and adjustments work, just not crazy about the reticle

I'm probably forgetting a few I've tried. At this point, if I need another scope I look for Super Slams, but they're getting pretty rare. I like the Optika5s I have on .22 centerfires and I like the Big Sky models with 50mm objectives.

Call me "luddite" or whatever you wish, but my "likes" suit the purposes of a guy (this one, at least) who likes sporter weight off-the-shelf rifles for hunting.

I'll end by saying that if Leupold made their scopes with adjustments as good as the Weavers and Sightrons, I'd end up with VX-5s on every rifle I own. I just have no confidence in their products anymore, and it's a real shame.
