New reloader here. I have a question about brass....

When you guys purchase brand new brass, do you run every round through a sizing die? Or do you spot check a few with calipers and then if ok, then assume they're all good enough to load?

Only brand I don’t size and fully process prior to loading the first time is Nosler. In my experience it is good to go straight out of the box.

Depends on quality of brass you’re buying and quality of ammo you’re trying to make.

I size it first.

And that's why that's all I buy.

I size everything. In all honesty, I can't tell you whether or not it is "necessary"... I just always approached the handloading process with a general distrust of mass manufacturing processes ... so, I assume that a certain % of new brass is off.... and with that assumption in mind, resizing everything just seems like the best course of action.

Lapua, Nosler, Norma run an expander ball through it.

All others FL size.

But last week, I ran an expander ball through Lapua and still had necks too tight. I had to go to a K&M neck expander, than a FL size.

bs on brass so expensive. But I'm in the business of perfect ammo, specifically built for this rifle. If I have to prep brass more, I will do it.

I rarely get new brass but when I do I size it.

Everything except Nosler gets some level of sizing from me. Nosler has always been good to go. I should probably size the necks on the Nosler as well for consistent neck tension. Right now I’m using Lapua and it needs significant prep on the neck. Great brass though.

Consistency in ammo is a key to unlocking accuracy. Make everything as uniform as possible each time. Even if brass is perfect after shipping, running it through a sizer sets the neck tension as it will be in the future using that die. So testing then is testing the brass as it will be in the future.

Tip since you are starting off, many of us have stuck a case in a sizing die. Go ahead and order a stuck case remover. Also order a collet type bullet puller and order the diameter collet for bullets you are loading.

There are some stickies at the top of this subforum with helpful tips. Loading manuals are very general guidelines. Learn the signs of excessive pressure and don’t push the envelope.

Welcome and good shooting. welcome

For all new brass (even lapua) I will
1) anneal
2) FL size/bump the shoulder to a consistent headspace (without the expander)
3) expand neck with caliber specific Sinclair expander mandrel
4) trim to uniform length

I have found this gives the most consistent neck tension and the SD/ES and MV consistency improves significantly

Lapua, Nosler, Norma run an expander ball through it.
