OK guys I pulled out a drawn in hunt in the bottom of the 9th and scored a second draw for Sea rim park Hogs (shotgun only). This hunt does extend in to nighttime so I have a few things to learn before I get there.

I picked up a cheap shotgun this year but havent shot it yet nor do I have any experience with shotguns. So youtube and the range here I come.

My question for you guys is ammo preference. We are allowed slugs and buckshot only. Can you guys recommend what may be best for hunting hogs????

unfortunately I have no clue as to what to expect from the hunt. We are allowed baiting so most likely I will be in some type of popup after dark.

My next question is does anyone have or know of a product that can attach my green light to my shotgun??? What have you guys used to attach a light with no rails on the gun??

Any advice is appreciated.

thanks
fellas

I like slugs better than buckshot for hunting. But, I like to load a slug for the first round and buckshot for the rest of them. My thought process is that they will run after the first shot and the buckshot gives me a better chance of hitting them on the run.

12 gauge

I really dont see anyway to attach a green light or a laser. I may need to invest in a new shotgun with a picatinny rail on it. That would solve all of my problems. This is definitely not a low light condition gun in anyway.

I'd see about getting a Mossberg 500 or similar with a 24" smoothbore barrel and rifle sights. Should be able to find one used fairly cheap.

"I picked up a cheap shotgun this year but havent shot it yet nor do I have any experience with shotguns. So youtube and the range here I come."

Shotguns :

1) shoot with both eyes open (better to see and track movement)

2) Don't need any stinking sights -not using sights involves being able to mount the shotgun / where top of receiver /barrel lines up with your dominate eye -that would be your right eye if you're a right-handed shooter & keeping a cheek weld (head down on gun thru the shooting evolution) once you learn to mount the shotgun the same way every time & keep your head on the stock - Where your EYES look is where the shot hit - with both eyes open focus on the target in the distance - NOT the silly gold bead on the end of most shotguns

youtube can help

PS - dont shoot slugs with a tight choke & nothing wrong with your gun as long as it will cycle whatever ammo you are using. You stated it is a new gun never shot - watch you tube/read manual & tear it down and clean it before using it

Just for grins we use to chase /hunt pigs w/shotguns from ATV's - i was using a o/u 20ga shooting #3 buck it would kill pigs but they would not always be DRT and was using the lights put out by the ATV - basically no sights on a moving target - fun times elmer

If you are gonna run buckshot then get some good stuff--

Federal Flight Control is the way to go-- the wad helps immensely with the pattern-- standard 00 buck at 25yrds was all over the place from a variety of manufacturers. The federal was putting all pellets on target.

Now- that was through a cylinder choke but I've run flight control for turkey and waterfowl and it does the job-- My $.02

That rail across the top makes it impossible to attach any type of device like the one shown above but I will keep looking and thinking.

One other questions about slugs vs buckshot. What is the maximum range for both of them from a smooth bore like mine?

thanks
fellas

Just go to Academy & look for hog lights they sell them that will clip on to anything . You will be mounting to the bottom side of barrel- your sight will not be obstructed that way & the rib should not cause a mounting problem

What you have is fine... No need to go buy another shotgun. Load it full of 00 buckshot, keep your shots under 30 yards and you will be fine.

I have had good luck with this in the 3" flavor, but 2 3/4" will work.

Hornady from Grab a Gun

Don't need a slug to kill a pig...

I ordered a shotgun attachment from Sniper hog lights. Thanks hetman you sent me in the right direction!

May order another one to attach a laser. We will see if it is possible once I receive and test this attachment from SHL and see if it will hold in place properly.

I picked up 2 boxes of hornady black 00 buck 1600fps. I'm guessing it will kick hard but just knock down pigs and maybe more than one if they are bunched up. Also grabbed a box of Winchester SuperX 1 OZ slugs also running at 1600fps. I will go test these out at the range once I get the attachment on and can test it all out together.

This could be fun!

Big

Call the hunt location and find out from them what they allow. I have been on several hunts and have two we were drawn on this year. The personnel at these hunts have always been extremely helpful. They should have sent you an email by now with information. They would be able to tell what range you may be shooting at. Good luck.

I know that buckshot will work but is very range restricted. I would certainly shoot some foster type (cheap) slugs and see where it hits using the bead. And I would try something such as this;

https://www.amazon.com/TRUGLO-Universal-Luminescent-Alignment-Elevation/dp/B000O919EI

Or

https://www.amazon.com/TRUGLO-Magnu...mp;pd_rd_i=B0000AVVUC&th=1&psc=1

A handheld spotlight in your left hand and those sights will give you 60 yards of range at night.

Got the green light on. Just need to test it out. I think the laser is next.

The attachment works just fine. I will test it out at the range in a few days[Linked Image]

Skip the laser unless you plan to use it only for quick follow up shots or running shots at departing hogs.

If its bright enough to be of any use (at night)....hogs will see it and spook.

The choke was my next question. I think my choke is a modified since it has 3 markings on it. So next week I will test it both with and without the choke in and see if there is any difference. Does academy sell chokes? Are chokes universal?

I am telling my wife (the boss) that I have to have the laser since it is a night hunt so it will probably be on in a few weeks. She is actually buying it for my me since it is on sale. (great wife who is a sucker for any sale)

I do want a green laser though. Anybody know if that green laser will show up nicely in that green light? The Olight Baldr R is on sale for $120. Cant beat that price for a half decent light /laser combo

It will be a nice addition to one of my bedside pistols after this hunt.

Looking forward to this hunt. I am having fun preparing this gun and getting it ready to go.

Uh . . . DO NOT shoot a shotgun threaded for screw in chokes
without a choke tube in place. If you don't want any degree of
choke, buy a cylinder bore tube and install that.

If you're going through all this effort for buckshot take the shortcut with TSS. Take a shot with mod choke to check point of impact. A gun made for bird shot may hit different with big tungsten.
