I keep snares out for hogs and coyotes. Sometimes they will 'twist off' a cable even with swivels if they wrap up around your anchor point (tree, fence post, etc). I've shot a few that had snare marks (probably mine).

Yea -- have seen this before too. They get pretty rowdy when snared and can certainly break free.

Yea -- have seen this before too. They get pretty rowdy when snared and can certainly break free. They won't break an un-compromised cable....but if the cable twists (opposite its manufactured direction), the cable becomes kinked or knotted, it can break with MUCH less force. Also if the animal gets wrapped around anything.....making the cable shorter they can more easily abrade or damage the cable (especially hogs, but Coyotes can put up a struggle too). I also don't use 'Berkshire' type locks (relaxing or non-relaxing) as I've just found them too flimsy. Once bent they won't function properly. I'll use a 'Cam Lock' instead. They are rugged, won't release and dispatch the animal (usually) before it has time to twist off a cable.

Might have been a snare that somebody tried to straighten out and re-use.

That's a possibility. Snares should be considered a one time use item, though on occasion they survive well enough to reuse. Coyotes and Bobcat won't always compromise the cable to a degree that it can't be used again, but hogs generally wreck one every time.

Glad you took him out.
As much as I hate them I do not like seeing any animal suffer.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Some of the hardware can be salvaged and re-used ( such as a quality cam lock ) Of course any of the sleeves and stops that are crimped are not I wouldn't try to re-use a snare that caught something myself. At least not the cable. ( maybe to re-do as an extension) I prefer foot or BG's myself. Either way, glad to see someone making a dent

I make my own snares and always place 'deer stops' on them so the loop can not close any tighter than about 3". This will prevent deer or other animals from being caught by the leg, hoof, paw. I also use a heavy duty swivel on my extensions....so its rare that anything twists the cable in two...but it does happen on occasion. IF caught around the neck (as intended) the Coyote, Bobcat, Hog is generally dispatched long before they can 'twist' a cable, but sometimes an animal will step through the loop and you'll have caught them around the neck and shoulder in which case they are very much alive and none too happy.

. . . .I make my own snares . . .
Yessir, the only way to fly if you're going to use them regularly. I've used a few, but I prefer the steels. I could probably do better with snares if I bought a supply of slide wires to keep them out of saplings and posts, etc., but that just put me deeper in rabbit hole than I wanted to go. About like all the fur handling tools and equipment. I'm not going to skin and process any of these animals in this region for what they pay. If I were a regular user of snares, yes indeed having the tools and making my own would be the smart way to go

I have no idea who made the snares that jacked these yotes up. I was sitting in the deer blind when they came limping by.
