I'm thinking about applying this year. I've read TPWD but I'd like to hear from folks that have it. Does the harvest option require a certain amount of deer to be taken? New at this so school me please.

My 3rd year on it. It's just a computer program that issues tags based on your drawn boundaries and surveys done in the area. I haven't had any doe tags reduced, but I come within 90% or do, in fact complete, 20+ doe tags issued.
It's pretty easy. Conservation Option is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

We got a new biologist this year who is more generous with the tags. 15 bucks and 30 does.

On the "Harvest Option" Let's say they issue 10 doe permits and 7 buck permits, and only 4 doe and 3 bucks are taken, what happens the next year when you apply for the permit?

I don’t think anything, but I don’t think you’ll get that ratio. I got 7 does and 3 bucks last year and took 7 and 1. Got the same ten tags this year.

I'm assuming there is not antler restrictions in an AR county with MLD?

I'm assuming there is not antler restrictions in an AR county with MLD? You are correct. No ARs if your MLD as it allows you to cull inferior bucks.

Anyone have a downside to MLD Harvest Option? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn. I have a narrow genetic on the ranch and have and had 4 and 5yr olds bucks that didn't meet AR. My GW told me to look into MLD.

My GW told me to look into MLD. The only downside is the tag limit, you can only use the MLD tags. If they give you three tags, that’s it. On my place, 10 wouldn’t be bad, but as I’m surrounded by 1500+ acres where no does are taken, I’d like to have 2-3 more doe tags.

Do all mld classes get around AR’s? Thought it was only the higher or highest level mld program that did. I know the program has changed quite a bit recently though.

Only two options in MLD now, harvest and conservation. I believe both are excluded from AR.
Main draw back to harvest option is, as mentioned, your tags are based off survey's done by the state in your area or region. We've been in and out of MLD for 7 or 8 years. When we got back in we looked at the harvest option and the website said based on our outlined area on the map, approx. 1,000 acres, we would get 6 doe tags and 1 buck tag. We went conservation option and based on our survey's we typically recieve between 30-40 doe tags and 15-30 buck tags.
We have not filled all our tags in any year, we meet with our biologist and typically get a goal of what he'd like to see based on the tags we're issued. In the last 3 years our buck/doe ratio has gotten very cloe to 1:1 which is pretty good for low fence.

Ah I see. Yeah the state surveys for our area said a deer to 17 acres or something way off base. Our density is significantly more.

Talked to my GW this morning, he's putting me in touch with the area's state biologist. He said that guy could answer all my questions.

We have been in MLD Conservation for several years now and were MLD Harvest For a year or two prior. We were already doing all the requirements when it comes to harvest logging/habitat/etc prior to enrolling in MLD so it made sense for us. We do our best to fill tags but probably are lucky to fill 50% of them. We got 10 buck tags and 20 doe tags on ~2000 acres. We are at a 2:1 doe buck ratio and 1 deer/10 acres.

We have been MLD Harvest for several years-- also for 2,000 acres. According to surveys we are allowed 10 bucks and 16 does. Our doe/buck ratio is 1.5 to 1. Have never maxed on bucks or does. Harvest on bucks, the minimum age is 3 1/2 years. Some biologists go to 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 minimum age for bucks. You will be required to remove the jawbone and send it to your biologist for aging the deer. This will be the kicker; your members will HAVE to be able to age bucks. We haven't had any reductions for buck permits, but we may only have 1 underage buck every few years. There are other requirements that go along with MLD, but they are different according to your location. Overall, we like it, just keep your biologist happy.
