Are these pretty rare? I saw a photo of one today. Great looking lab. Thinking about getting a bird dog soon. Was leaning towards a DD, but who knows.

Lab's are 3 colors technically, black, yellow, and chocolate. The red lab is technically a yellow, just a different shade of yellow.
I would buy from a breeder that is breeding to create a great retriever, not a breeder that is more focused on color.

Fox red labs are genetically yellow. No, they aren’t that rare, in General most yellow labs from working lines tend to be on the darker side but that’s not always true.
The fox red color is not in any way the same as silver/charcoal/Champaign. Those colors come from the recessive form of the dilute gene.
As Guy stated stay away from anyone who is breeding specifically for color. A good breeder may have fox red looking labs but color is not and should not be their main focus.
It’s perfectly fine to want a fox red lab bug find a litter you want that was bred based on health, temperament and ability…….then look at color.

We just got one that came from a more white-ish yellow and a more red-ish yellow. He was one of the darker pups from the litter but he’s got some light spots. Our last lab was pretty light colored. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/10/full-54542-367577-8f3a8e4a_8164_47ee_b9d9_cc9758d462d5.jpeg)
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

When I had working labs and Chessies. I often heard the yellow labs referred to as Wheat on the lighter ones and Chessnut on the darker ones. So red Fox wouldn’t be a far stretch. Doubt it’s made it’s way to the AKC registration process.

Like said above, they’re not super rare, but I’d say uncommon. My pup is red. I got her from a college friend who owned the parents. Sire was a MH and HRCH dog. He quit training dogs when the dam was a pup so she never got titles but had all the health clearances. I personally love the red color. But color really doesn’t matter if they don’t have the desire to hunt. Or the break down with terrible joints at 4 or 5 years old. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/10/full-34964-368181-25e2a86d_4287_40ff_8526_60fc4643f7de.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/10/full-34964-368182-1b47daad_3af6_4920_9068_ab6226a79d54.jpeg)

Not sure if he is the smartest or dumbest dog around. Gets to sleep in with mama, doesn’t have to swim hundred yards in cold water, get muddy, etc.

Doubt it’s made it’s way to the AKC registration process. Black, yellow, and chocolate are the only 3 colors recognized. Fox Red is a variation/shade of yellow. Yellow can range from very light to fox red - all are within breed standard and natural color variations of pure bred labradors. Something like silver is not.

Are these pretty rare? I saw a photo of one today. Great looking lab. Thinking about getting a bird dog soon. Was leaning towards a DD, but who knows. My Red Fox is a canoe sized female. She’s a natural upland pointer, duck dog, and world class indoor family pet.
