I’ve been interested lately in getting my first muzzleloader. I own a couple CVA Hunter centerfire rifles and I really like them so I’m inclined to go with one of their guns.

Im thinking I will just shoot open sights instead of a scope.

The gun I’ve been considering most is the Accura MR-X. I’ve been wondering if the LR-X would be more accurate with a 4” longer barrel. But at the distances I would be shooting with open sights I may not be able to take advantage of any improved accuracy anyway. Out of curiosity what kind of accuracy can you expect from the CVA Wolf? It doesn’t have the Bergara barrel and it’s only 24”. But the gun is about half the price as the MR-X.

I have a hard enough time with accuracy with a scope on ML. Good luck with open sights.

If you are going to shoot open sights, pretty much inline muzzleloader currently on the market should do just fine. I wouldn’t spend the extra coin on an Accura unless you plan on adding optics. My two T/C rifles will hold 1 1/2” groups at 100 with Triple 7 pellets and 250 grain sabot style bullets. Went down the small-group rabbit hole a few years ago and got groups consistently under 1”, but it was a PITA. I don’t need sub-MOA accuracy where I hunt in the thick stuff.

Adchunts, I would love it if you would elaborate on how you squeezed accuracy out of the ML.
I haven’t shot mine enough to really test its accuracy, but it’s not close to 1.5”.

A lot depends on the bullet. My rifle didn't like power belts but loves shock waves. Maybe 2 1/2" groups at 100 yards, with sand bags and a scope. About as good as a modern rifle.

I have multiple .50 hawkens rifles that will shoot three bullets touching at 100 yards off a led sled, and iron sights. Play with powders and bullets.

I'll double that, I didn't want to say muzzle loaders are that accurate as I figured no one would believe me but they can be very accurate. If most of the game you shoot takes only one bullet, why not just hunt year round with a muzzle loader? I have a couple of times.

DS I’ve actually been thinking the same thing. I’ve read a few things lately saying that MLs can be very accurate.

muzzleloaders are like any other firearm.
you have to find a load it likes through experimentation.
first and foremost you have to be consistent with what
you load and how you load it.
they can shoot as well as any other firearm you use

I think you would be surprised what that CVA Wolf will do. I took this Gila bull with mine at 154 yards shooting 250 gr. Barnes Express, 150 grains pellets.

jdickey, congrats on a great bull. We’re you shootings open sights or using a scope?

Here is a few pics from my old muzzleloader post. I have cva Acura 2 long range that I take to Kansas. I have put 4 powders and 6 different bullets down it and it will not out shoot any of my hawkens. I had a tc pro hunter for awhile and I couldn’t get 2” groups with a scope from it. In-line with bad weather is the way to go.

Using an old Redfield scope! Our outfitter had us sight in at 300 yards, too!

One tip I’ve found is that just because the gun can handle 150 grains of powder, doesn’t mean it’s most accurate with loads using that much powder. I had an old knight that was great shooting 100 grains of pellets and a powerbelt. Killed several deer at 125 yards.

Well your eyes are in excellent shape! I have trouble keeping them on a paper plate at 100 yards using irons.
