I’ve had a wildfire for year and year, and have yet to get something to come to the call.

I recently dug it back out as I have one or more coyotes destroying my flock of chickens.


I am dealing with coyotes that have probably never heard an electric call but what sequence should I be using to break the foxpro curse?

I’d be using chicken sounds if that’s what they are coming too

But this is another reason I don’t like electric calls, they learn pretty quick. Just because you haven’t seen or killed one while using doesn’t mean they aren’t there watching you.

I use mouth calls exclusively. I was always a daytime coyote hunter until I bought a thermal scope. The amount of coyotes I wasn’t seeing during the day was crazy once I started using a thermal during the day. Now I hunt coyotes almost exclusively at night with the thermal

BigPig you are spot on. Everything he has stated here is true as I have numerous time witnessed the same behavior.

I like mouth calls because they are so easy to take along in the field. The only thing I don't like about them is sometimes the coyotes come in so fast they get too close for comfort.

10 years is a long time. I don't have an electronic call. I'm still using the same Johnny Stewart tape caller I have been using since the 1980s. At my young county lease the absolute best tape for calling coyotes has been a fawn bleat distress. It is my go to call there. Oddly the rabbit related tapes don't do very well on the coyotes at that place. But for what little predator calling I do these days it is mostly mouth calls. A custom open read coyote howler and another custom predator call that I have no idea what it mimics. Maybe a rabbit, I just know i can make you feel sorry for whatever is dying if you hear it. It's been a very effective combination. If coyotes are are near and think there is another coyote present with a kill, they show pretty quick. I called and shot one just a few days ago during late morning with only a few yips and challenge barks after an initial short round on my predator call a few minutes before. I think sometimes the loud constant calling that comes from some of the electronic calls can be too much to be natural to an experienced predator.

As for bigpigs' watching you statement. I think that could be very true. During the time my dog Blaze was working as a decoy dog, it was amazing how fast coyotes came out of distant tree lines to meet up with her throwing all caution to the wind while doing the dances with wolves thing before I whistle her in. No telling how many times before when nothing showed that coyotes were hung up beyond the trees just watching for me. The experience made me wonder if a silhouette coyote decoy or coyote motion decoy of some sort could be useful when calling alone is not going well.

Hmmm, the decoy coyote is something I used to use regularly, but have forgotten about. I need to dust it off and get to using it again. I had some success using it a few years ago, though I’m far from the best coyote hunter. The decoy is named Pelosi.

You’re trying to lure them in, not scare them off.

The pup in distress call has always worked well for me. Also, Lighting Jack is a good one. They come in fast and you have to be at the ready. Thermal is the way to go if you have one.

Okay, rough time for a poll. I started with mouth calls and dreamed of a good electronic set up- boy that would really pull them in. I was sort of disappointed. I do about as well (maybe better) with a mouth call. Anyone else have the same experience?

Decoy dog? I must be naive but I've never heard of anyone doing that. Until I caught my male pitbull screwing a coyote in the middle of the day I thought coyotes avoided domestic dogs like the plague.

I hunt with both most nights during the fur season and mouth callas seem to work a little bit better in heavily hunted areas. Luckily, around my ranch, nobody calls except me. I could never count the number of animals that have come into my FoxPro but it's a lot.

I know it doesn't make sense but I seem to have better results with the old mouth calls.

I’ve had lots of success with fox pro electronic callers. And always carry a fox pro mouth call around my neck while hunting anything. Has paid off several times when a coyote randomly pops out.

I think bait dog may be the more accurate term.

Same here! I've always had a response from yotes and foxes! Using a FoxPro Krakatowa, it sends a longrange call and I also keep a Knight & Hale distress pup bellows call in my pack for when it's slow during deer hunts. It gets something moving really quick!

The reason for your success is quite simple, you are producing realistic frequencies with your hand calls that cannot be achieved with any electronic caller on the market today. Simply put, you are producing a more realistic sound with your hand calls.

What mouth calls are y’all using/recommend?

Hi how does a person find how to lease property to hunt on? I never had to do this in California as there is lots of forest and Blm land to hunt on. Most of the yots are in the cities in California now, well that is how I am going to say it. I drove around for years trying to find a good spot for ground squirrels and yots and I have only shot one yot with my 30 06 while hunting for deer. I was more excited about the yot then the deer that I made a bad shot and hit the yote in the stomach area and blew him apart, I felt really bad. I had yot fever lol. The coyotes were very hard to hunt they are pretty smart. The deer not so much, I would be hiking and singing to myself and walk up on them lol. I really want to do some hunting

Obviously one of mine made about, from oh 10 years ago... but you would have to go to Alaska and get a few of the collectors to sell you one, or thieve the one that is in the Predator call Museum lol.

Then again I though you bought one at some time. Memory fades you know.
