An elk hunter got more than he bargained for last Saturday, October 9 when a mature mountain lion approached and charged him. The incident occurred during an early-season rifle hunt in southeast Idaho. In a remarkable video captured by the hunter on his cell phone and later shared by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), John C. Erickson yells “get back” at the advancing mountain lion before firing multiple rounds from his .40 caliber Glock 27. His bullets appear to hit just inches above the predator’s head and back.......

Wow, bet he had to change his drawers after that. Lucky he was armed. I hope the next person that encounters that cat is armed also or it may end differently.

Dumb [censored] was so worried about filming it to be a hero he didn’t even hit the thing. He should have picked up his rifle and killed it, next guy it encounters probably won’t be so lucky.

That was my exact thought. Atleast use a lessor recoiling caliber roflmao

I’n his defense he should of filmed(since he already did) but then dropped phone and killed cat. Would made for a short investigation

That was my thought too. Kill a cat without a tag and what is the punishment? How do you prove you felt your life was endangered?

I wouldn't have backed up. After missing the first shot I'd have switched to the rifle or gone two-handed and unloaded. Wonder if he was bowhunting.

That guy is lucky. I would have got enough film to prove it was chasing me and then I would have dropped the phone and mag dumped.

What really surprises me is how the cat stuck around after the gunfire.

You report it and you will be cleared especially if you killed it with pistol. It’s more of an annoyance, as you are going to waste precious hunting time dealing with it.

Trex and I had an encounter few years back with one. I had my pistol in my bino harness not hip and almost got a little western. Luckily the A-Hole finally walked off. Year later I ran into CO GW and asked what would of happened. He said the above. Cat close enough to kill with pistol is pretty cut and dry, with that said self reporting it and not doing SSS, makes process pretty quick.

I was thinking exactly the same thing.
It is very apparent this lion has lost its fear of humans and him not killing it could cost someone their life in the future!

I would have smoked it myself

Fear is taught and learned. The assumption that the cat lost its fear of humans would assume it had a fear of humans in the first place. It may never have encountered a human before.

That cat was in full predator mode with its ears down and out. It was entering its charge right at the first shot. That guy is very lucky!

He definitely waited too long. Interesting encounter.

I don't believe the cat was 'stalking' the man (as for prey) but rather making an aggressive move on him as if to protect something (nearby kill, cubs, territory).

Generally a Mountain Lion (if wanting to attack a prey animal) stays low to the ground and doesn't pounce/attack until nearly upon its prey. In other words....it would rather you never saw it coming. It would be in full 'stealth' mode.

Also the wide outstretched position of the front legs and paws is consistent with what you'll see them do when defending themselves or making a short (stay back) charge. Especially if hounds are involved.

A Mountain Lion intent on killing you (as if prey) isn't going to walk up and 'maul' you.....it will pounce and try to bite the throat or back of your neck if it can.

Really odd behavior from that cat.

That was my thought as well. That thing wasn’t stalking him. He came near some babies that were out of sight. Otherwise that cat would have been in the next county if he got close to it. There was another similar video of a jogger and the lion chasing him away from its babies.

That cat meant business, and I would have for sure shot and killed it. A cat like that walking , disregarding a yell and not running off after being shot at, could be real trouble for a hunter or hiker. Too bad he didn't kill the cat.

I certainly agree the gentleman would have been justified and well advised to have shot the cat. In fact, he tried to...albeit a bit too late.

The guy was so rattled by the experience and handicapped (shooting strong side only,no support hand) because he was recording the event that he simply missed TWICE.

Fortunately... the cat finally got the message and broke off the altercation.

An unarmed person in the same situation might not have fared as well.

At least he didn't turn and run. I can tell you for certain how that would turned out.

May have had kittens in the area. Lucky for the lion, the guy could not shoot. Why carry a sidearm if you don’t know how to use it?

One of scary things about this is while walking backwards if he would have tripped and gone down he would have had a lap full of big cat, bet he see's how stupid his whole reaction was, glad he made it through that without getting completely mauled, In Africa they say a Leopard that gets on you is a hundred stitches, for every second, and its true!

PH's are all of one accord about African Lion vs. Leopard. Many would rather deal with the Lion.

All concur....a lion will pick out one person and go for them. A Leopard wants a piece of everyone there.
