I searched around and it seems you are able to deduct deer donated through Hunter for the Hungry. Has anyone done this, is there specific documentation you need to ask for from the processors, are there specific processors that can provide documentation or anyone that participates through hunters for the hungry?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Wish I had known this years ago. One year we killed 35 does off of a family owned place in the Hill Country. A majority of them went to Hunters for the Hungry.

If you paid a processing fee on the deer that was donated, that would be tax deductible. But the value of the deer itself is $0.

Don't let that deter you. It's a good program feeding people in need.

What's the average processing fee for dropping one off for Hunters for the Hungry? I don't think either of the ones in Junction participate, but the place I like wants 50.00 for them to process for the food bank. If you're whacking a bunch of does, that adds up. He works with me, but it depends on how many people have said they want deer meat and how many I have. 2 or 3 contacts in Menard have told me to call the Sherrif's department and they have a list of folks that will come and get them. I dropped off two last year. The ladies in the office, that I had to arrange it with, were not...well, let's just say they seemed very confused...about everything.

I think the processors set their own fee's. Probably need to call your local one to find out. The link to this years registered processors are here:

^^ Thank you. up I see Woodbury's in Kerrville dropped out. That doesn't surprise me. I could always haul 'em to Boerne, when it's cool.

Processor I use does Hunters for the Hungry, but he also maintains a list of folks who want venison but no longer have a way to get it....husband died, lost lease, whatever. Those folks pay all the processing fees if you donate the deer. Cool way to help out some folks who enjoy it but can't get it anymore.

My guy in Junction does the same. But, Junction ain't no big town. Plenty on government help, but not that many have much get-up-and-go to even talk to the processor.

Me and a buddy get them processed and then we give the meat to the employees in the office. I just keep what I need and then place the rest in the office freezer for whoever needs it.

That's what I was thinking, I would just keep the actual receipt from the processor as the pertinent document.

We donate a ton of deer each year (MLD and get ~30 tags a year) and are not planning to stop, I just randomly had the thought of whether those would count as deductible donations or not

There have been a few bills on donated wild game that get introduced, but never get passed. Most of them I think put the tax deduction at around $50 with a max limit of some amount. So if one of those bills had passed, there probably would not have been an advantage of donating multiple deer due to the cap. When I was doing Rodeo, I was riding in a lot of charity rodeos as well as a bull riding event coordinator for a Charity Rodeo Circuit. to figure out what I could deduct on taxes I called the IRS and asked them and documented what I was told on the call. You might simply call and ask. Not to say if you call them 5 times, you might get 5 different answers, but that is how I handled it.
