I have my own land that I hunt. I have a neighbor great friend who and has been spot some last year and now both weekends this year. He is talking like he wants to put up a stand. I have 20 acres and have three feeder and three stands. Would you either not let him hunt so much or like four weekend for the year., make him pay for the corn or have him pay for a lease fee. I don’t want to over crowd with stands and feeders. Please let me know your thoughts

I think what he is trying to say is he has a neighbor who is a good friend who wants to hunt his 20 acres, which features 3 stands and 3 feeders, but is considering limiting his access as to not over-hunt the property.

It’s your land. You have to make the decision on who you allow to hunt it, when they can hunt it, and if you want them to pay for items being used. 3 stand/feeders on 20 acres is already over crowded in my opinion.

I would tell him no. 20 acres isn’t enough for two hunters. If he doesn’t like it he can go buy his own 20 acres and do whatever he wants there. Him paying for corn or a lease fee isn’t going to amount to diddly squat in dollars and is only going to make him feel entitled and like he owns the place which is going to interfere with your enjoyment of your land.

I invite people to hunt on my place occasionally. I am very careful about things because I don’t want want anyone thinking I owe them something. For example one guy who I have brought hunting always offers to help fill feeders, mow, whatever. That is great and I am sure he is just wanting to be helpful but I tell him no thanks. Honestly the help would be great but if I brought him out here and had him work all day he would be expecting something in return.

Maybe I am weird but I want to invite guests when I want to and I don’t want to feel obligated to do so.

You can tell people haven't been raised right in a while. No way no how would any one I know make a suggestion about hanging a stand on land they were fortunate enough to hunt as a friend.

I just tell folks that due to insurance concerns it isn’t a good idea to let others hunt on my land. I do allow the grandson to hunt here.

How many deer do you take a year? What do the neighboring properties look like? You've got to think about how many deer are in the area and how many you can take without over-hunting or you won't have any deer left to hunt. We have 250 acres, and I'm thinking of limiting the harvest to 3 deer this year as I feel like there has been a decline in the population over the last few years. When we have guests, it is typically "you can shoot all the pigs and coyotes you want. Only had one guest in the last few years shoot deer. He's a painter by trade, and he painted my house for cost of materials in exchange for a deer hunt. 1 deer a year on 20 acres is a pretty heavy harvest, and 3 feeders on 20 acres is a lot of feeders.

This sounds right... I know I wouldn't. I wouldn't even offer to bring anything the next time I was invited assuming I got invited back. I'd just do it. I quit bringing people to my place that have a vision for what they could do if they had a place.

we have 60 acres, my Dad and my Uncle started with 30 and we have added to the place over the years. From the beginning this was a problem, "friends" offering sweat equity for hunting privileges. Until finally Dad and Phil made a family only rule. It has caused some tension over the years, but I daresay it has been minimal compared to what it would have been compared to having a guest policy.
WE do allow guests but only for hogs in the spring, and 1 person who gets to muzzleloader hunt during the muzzleloader only season. (basically because I am the only ML hunter and we have been best friends since the 4th grade and he grew up fishing and camping and working the place, and my parents considered him their other son.) BUT, he only gets to hunt after the muzzle loader season after everyone else is done.

This is the easiest way out if you don't want to confront him. Tell him your not worried about him suing you, its when a bottom feeding lawyer convinces one of his cousins, that
they could own the place because he shot himself falling out of a tree.

If friends didn't allow friends to hunt, I never would have gotten started. Probably wouldn't be on this forum. Oh for my friends, all of you guys could have been without me.

Hell, my little place is 32 acres and I have one stand and corn feeder in the middle of it and have only taken 4 deer in 13 years from it.

Deer are not comfortable at your place. Too many Buffalos around.

I guess another big thing to consider is how good of a friend are we talking about? If it’s a close friend you have known for twenty years that is one thing. If it’s an acquaintance that is another. Hunting brings out a lot of ugly in people. I know a guy who has several people that he only talks to during hunting season so he can mooch off them and hunt their spots. It is disgusting.

We're in a perceptually overcrowded situation when you look at numbers of hunters vs amount of land. We hunt 4 people on just over 100acres. Now many read that and immediately jumped to the, "way too many" assumption, which normally would be completely accurate. However, our annual harvest average on the property is has been two deer a year total over the last 10yrs or so that we've kept track. We are not only extremely selective about what we harvest, we spend lots of money and time increasing the carrying capacity of the property. On top of all of that, we have one neighbor who's property borders our north and east who might kill a deer a year off of his 400+ acres, and the property to our west is over 300 acres with no hunting allowed. So in reality there's about 800acres with 3 deer a yr being harvested, now the numbers don't look so bad.

When you look at the big picture we could likely get away with a little more than we presently do, but the balance we've reached seems to work fine for our situation.

For 20 acres to support 2 hunters would take another unique situation even if each harvest only 1 deer a yr.

Your land. You are under no obligation to let a neighbor hunt. 20 acres isn't much land to hunt in the best of circumstances.

We all know people like this. I don't know what it is about hunting that makes some people forget all sense of manners and dignity. No shame, low rent broke a-- loosers. I pay 5k per year for a great lease and every now and then someone asks me to "take them". Reminds me of people that wanted copies of my notes in college because they never came to class.
