Seems like I’m replacing the fill valve or flapper every year now. I swear these things lasted longer when I was a kid. And yes, I know it’s not a hard job, but come on… can’t someone make something that lasts longer? Anyone else having this problem or am I just having “crappy” luck confused2

The valves used to be solid brass and the float ball was metal too. Those would last twenty, thirty years. And made in USA.

We made stuff the best it could be made.

I just restored a GE pedestal fan that was given to my wife’s grandmother in the 1930s. Built like a tank. We’ve used it for over forty years. Still works. Solid, heavy. Made in USA.

They built it to be the best.
Not many do that any more.

Are you guys using the drop in cleaning tabs in the tank? It seems like I burned through the flappers every year or so when we used those. I stopped using them and I haven't replaced a flapper in years.

Clean the flapper and tank sealing surface on occasion (grit and grime will build up). As mentioned above...the drop in pucks can corrode components

I’ve noticed on the flapper a small bubble develops on the rubber seal. This causing a place where it doesn’t seal to the rubber on the bottom seal.

Just dig an outhouse. No more flapper problems, plus you'll save hundreds a year on your water bill.

Do they still even make the old bobber style float for the tank anymore?

We have tall seat toilets in our house, only one out of the three has given us a problem and I believe who ever installed the guts in the tank did not cut the hose long enough to go far enough down the tube, so it would pop out periodically. Thought about what could I wedge it in there with but no solution that way, so I taped it.
It is a weird contraption if the water does not go down that tube the bowl does not fill scratch

One time when that hose popped out of the tube it was pointed just right where the water it the lid right over the tank and made a nice mess on the floor.

It could be your water. When you look in the tank is it rusty or slimly looking or smell like sulfa?

I remodeled my house and exactly 1 year later BOTH toilets stopped working at the exact same time and had to replace the guts on both. Nothing lasts anymore.

I have not replaced either of mine in probably 10 years. The master cycles on and off about 4 times on a flush but until it quits shutting off I am not replacing it. Last time I had a flapper go bad I was having a party. I shut off my septic sprinklers because we were all outside. It surprised me how quickly a toilet running can fill a septic tank.

Might try one of those water saving commodes.

I also like to add a little silicone grease to help create a better seal and make the rubber last longer. It's the same grease used to lubricate the internals of single handle shower faucets.

Stub, what you have is one of the new style toilets. I replaced the whole toilet in the master bath a few months back, and it has that exact same set up. No flapper at all… just that cone type deal. Completely different than anything I had ever seen, and I’m hoping it lasts longer. The seat is also higher like you say. At first I thought it was too high, but now I’m used to it and feel like I’m almost falling down on the lower toilets if I use those. Guess it’s all what you get used to.

RedRanger, you’re so full of shiz, I figured you’d be replacing toilet parts all the time roflmao lol just messing with ya. Glad to know I’m not alone.

Well, walked in from hunting lease 3 weeks ago to raining through celing from upstairs. Toilet water reservoir was cracked up side and water spewing out. Probably been pouring out a day or so. Upstairs/Downstairs heavy water damage throughout ceilings, walls, cabinets, hardwoods.... Replaced that toilet and will be replacing others during all the repairs
