Our farm policy with Farm Bureau just underwent a review and the underwriters for the policy have stated that in order for our insurance policy with Farm Bureau to remain effective our hunting lease clients must hold a hunting lease liability insurance policy with us (the landowners) as named insured on the policy. I was wondering how common it is for insurance to require landowners' hunting clients to hold a liability policy and if anyone has had any trouble with clients not wanting to purchase a policy?

Agents will be on here soon to help. The last lease I was on the LO mentioned it in the beginning, but when neither he nor our lease "manager" would actually do any leg work on it, the idea died and we were on 4 years total. But...there was an incident with another lease member's son and his friend, the friend shooting himself in the leg, that could have turned sticky. 'Kid recovered. 'Glad I wasn't there.

American National Insurance Company (Moody family - originally a Texas company realmad) wouldn't even cover our ranch when I told them only friends and family would be hunting.

I would assume any liability insurance company is gonna want to review the lease documents. 'Doubt it'll be a cheap premium and I'm sure lawyers are gonna want to get involved and bill hours.

I confess '0' knowledge on the subject -- but ------------ I suspect this issue of insurance and lawsuits against landowners is the beginning of the end of hunting leases. I am familiar with several people who got hurt on the job on purpose so they could sue the owner of the company. Same thing with people wrecking with an 18 wheeler truck on purpose. etc etc.

You can get lease insurance thru crown pine leasing for insurance for other than their timber company land. Go to their website.

American Hunting Lease Association has insurance programs for landowners and leasees. Landowner insurance is apparently for vacant land. Maybe the trend is to require leasees to get this kind of insurance to mitigate the chance of intentional actions like mentioned above. Sucks, but this appears to be the society that is being created and this indusrty is not immune.

I've had a policy as a lessee for years, currently paying $578 per year for right under 5K acres, have my landowner as additional insured. It's a relatively cheap line item when considering the overall cost of the lease and everything that goes along with it.

What company are you using? As a licensed agent, I searched extensively years ago and could not come up with many options.

NFP Property & Casualty, Inc, it was formerly known as Outdoor Insurance Group. This is the first year with NFP

It's relatively cheap for a lease insurance policy, be sure it has fire coverage and read all the exclusions. Many these days exclude atv/utv accidents, above ground blind accidents etc but can add for extra premium. Yes, add landowner as "additional insured". I also suggest naming each lease member as an "insured" . And yes there is a difference between "an insured" and "an additional insured"..

NRA members can get a hunting lease policy through the NRA as another option
