Davis, are you saying you go through 4000 pounds of protein a month in just one feeder?

Protein is such a wild variable. At my place I have 6 feeders on 330 acres. They hold 600 lbs and I fill them every three months. The corn they throw is cleaned up daily. I have one protein feeder that holds 2,000 lb and is free choice. It lasts about a year on one fill. For whatever reason my deer don't go crazy over the protein but I don't doubt in other places they do. So annually I am feeding 14,400 lbs of corn and 2,000lbs of protein

Yes Sir, I fill that sucker every Saturday morning. Plan to invest in a 2nd larger capacity unit in the near future.

Lots of variables...but I figure 2# of protein a day per deer feeding free choice. You should be able to create a loose budget using this.

I am assuming (yeah, I know) that you guys are fencing in the feeders to exclude pigs. Right?

Nope. No cattle, so no fencing. "My" pigs are nocturnal and rarely show during daylight and run deer off. Protein ports are usually too high for them. Of course, when I have a feeder in a corral trap, set to go off at night, they don't show up.

Prob between 7000-10000 lbs of protein a year. Some months will be higher consumption and some will be lower. If you have high deer density it’s will go up even more.

figured that be expensive. started with the 7000# @8.50 a bag, (not sure of price), roughly 31.00 a week. not bad.

Kinda anyone use the liquid attractant?
Since first got trail cams, thinking 90's, have put out several types attractant. With trail cam set up ta see what deer like.

Are their any Good products with protein ta benefit deer ?

Yes we use 12 hog panels around all of our protein feeders to keep cows and pigs out.

Sapper, is that for one feeder? How many months of the year? Is that your westerly place?

That’s based on what I was feeding from one feeder on Ft Hood yr around. They were eating 300 lbs every 2 weeks most the yr. Sometimes less sometimes more. Feeder was penned and cows and hogs couldn’t get the protein. I only did it one year and it was a fairly dry year. Had lots of deer hitting the protein.

I personally think feeding protein at the cost it is today means one thing. You are either selling deer for enough to justify it or you have plenty of expendable cash and the cost of doing so means nothing. You just like to see big deer. I tried it once and for what I charge for hunting it did not work out. But I do like looking at the pictures of what it does do.

Our family place is 380 acreas. I fed double down it is 16.99 a bag. I have 2 free choice feeders 1 is 500 and the other is a 1200 lb free choice. I put between 1000 and 1250lbs every 3 weeks split between the two feeders. The 5oo which actually holds 9 bags is empty in 2.5 weeks and the other feeder with the remainder is empty in 3 wks. I catch wild pigs and sale them to take care of my expenses. otherwise I couldnt do it. I run 3 600lb corn feeders and 1 350 lb corn feeder. I run them basically year round the 350 will go empty every so often the 600 lb feeders never go empty. If we didnt own the place I probably wouldnt protein feed. This year was a must because of the drought. Im not a salesman for feed but put the double down out and I sure you the deer will eat more than 2000 lbs a year unless thats all you put out. I added a water source by the protein feeder the deer stand in line to drink water and in line to eat from the protein feeder. It is amazing how they are in need for it. My protein feeders are not next too my corn feeders they are tucked back away from all feeders. They are in a pen by them self. So to answer the 1st question I would say 2 bags of free choice protein to every bag of corn that is from march til sept. Now the protein will slow and the corn will pick up because I will through more corn during hunting seasons.
