Hi I am new to this forum and for the first time and looking into going on a hunting trip and need help. I am a Veteran of the 80's and I have lived in California more most of my life other than the moving around in the service and going on hunting trips with buddies in Idaho and South Caroline. California had one good thing about it and that was public land. We could ride our jeeps, quads and motorcycles many places all for basically 50 dollars for a two year license. Hunting too you could go many places for ground squirrels and yotes. Here in Texas I don't show a lot of areas from around Venus area where I live now. I have Onx hunt app for about 5 years and has greatly helped me to many areas but Texas is a totally different game. I have known that since my Army buddy who lived in Seven points Tx tried to explain to me about land lock lol. Now i am here and I am glad to be, I am closer to my grandkids who have been here for 6years and i don't don't have to hear my wife cry anymore over seeing pictures of the little ones learning how to walk. Now with Texas Prairiedog Safaris, I read one posting here about 5 years ago and I have not been able to find any other information or complaints. I have turn about 12 none gun owners in California into gun owners by taking them out at my expense using my trusty ruger 10/22. One of them into a hunter and other co worker moved here about 4 years ago and he is wanting to go. He doesn't have his hunters license yet and he is 311 miles from me, but we talk on the phone. I think that this place will not be good for him, but as for me and me alone, I might be. I am use to driving all day looking for ground squirrels just to give the new hunter the chance to take the shot or two on one just to keep it fun. I was going to use Larry but if he really only uses one Dogtown then it may not be fun for my friend. Any suggestions on the above location and any suggestion for me to take my friend and I out for our first Texas hunt. My friend is already buying a new scope lol. I need to keep it as fun as possible thank you for your help Robert

Welcome, and thank you for your service! Finding a place to hunt prairie dogs here in Texas can be a real adventure. 20 years ago you could go up into the Panhandle, look for dog towns, find out who the owner was, drive up to his house and ask politely if you could trim his PD herd. About 75% of the time you would be welcomed. That, obviously, is no longer the case, primarily because land owners have had bad experiences with the hunters and no longer wish to run the risk of some stranger coming onto his property and shooting everything in sight, leaving litter all over the place and not stopping by the house to tell the owners "thanks." Your best bet nowadays is to find yourself an outfitter. Be forewarned, though: there are unscrupulous folks out there who will promise you anything and deliver nothing. Demand a list of referrals and then call them before you part with any of your money!

Does anyone have outfitters that they would refer? I looked at the web and there for prairie dog hunting but maybe that wasn't the keyword for that. I will research but if anyone has a referral please let me know. I am not looking for any promises by any means but, a legit place would be greatly appreciated Best regards Robert

Well I guess I am out of luck here in Texas for sure, the outfitters that came up, mostly want big groups, one says no less then 3 in a group. That counts me out for sure, I don't know any other hunters, this is turning out way worse then California lol. At least there, I would go off by myself for the weekend looking on public land. hammer

Okay I am looking for it now, thanks. I tied to get on line with my phone so i can post a picture of my Black Tail deer that I shot in the San Bernardino, Ca mountains probably 17 years ago. Only about 3 percent of hunters get a buck in those mountains and he is not bad either. I don't see yet how to upload lol.

Finding a place with a good amount of pdogs is tuff. Guides that have great places normally book a year in advance and require a larger group size (4 or more shooters) to make it worth their while. that brings the problem of trying coordinate a bunch of folks that can go on the same dates as you. Plus, shooters are not willing to share their spots for fear they will not be able to get on it the following year. I've hunted with a few different guides over the years it's always been tuff to book a hunt with them again. Normally you just have to keep asking and hope for a cancellation that you can pick up. My problem is that none of my hunting friends shoot pdogs or even have the small caliber rifles to do so. Don't expect to find pdogs in Texas close enough to shoot 22lr's at and expect to hit one. This summer I paid for 4 shooters and only two of us went. The drought was hard on the dog towns so at the first sound of a shot the pdogs went for their holes. As a result, most of our shooting was 500 plus yards.

Retired U. S. Army, which means I still have to work to make a living.

It is the same thing basically in California too. We don't need guides for the most part its all the ground walking and miles of driving just to find a spot. There is lots of public land for sure. I know this isn't really normal but, I want to shoot at the 500 yards I want to learn to do it or do it better. I have a Leupold 8.5x25 scope and I had over have i don't know as its been a long time since i shot it, scope on my ar15. I had a 200 zero and the little tick marks drop down to basically 500 yard. I shot one ground squirrel at 500 yards, I had a range finder and it was ranged using this on the rock. It felt really good that I hit that thing with my 223. I went ahead and book my hunt with this guy who says basically is all that he does is long distance and this is what I want to do and try. I would like to find another one closer too but, I really would like to work on this for sure. I am thinking about a new rife too but I don't want a barrel burner either. 243 the rounds are really still hard to find and over priced and I don't want to another reloading round either, so maybe a bolt action 223? Maybe something with a 1 and 7 twist to shoot a heavier bullet? The ar15 is 1 and 9 that I have now, just thinking.
