South of Henderson: Was the seller telling tall-tales, or should I see some deer and hogs on my land? #8692052 09/20/22 09:57 PM

The wife and I now own >36 acres ~North of Mt Enterprise, ~South of Henderson...

Not currently planning on fencing it in, unless something comes up and it is needed,
as I want edible-critters to "Come-on-down", like it's the "Price is Right"!!!

Per my 1st post, I plan on taking as many durned crawfish as the creek will allow!!!

Wondering if I will be taking White Tail Deer... and during the rainy season hogs, too,
or if the seller was telling tall-white-tales to sell the land?

Any local-input as to the accuracy of the seller's "tales" would be appreciated...

Many deer in that area now. Just keep natives from hunting with you, you should be good.

There’s good deer in that area. Used to drive through mt enterprise every month or so, headed to Carthage. Saw some decent deer through out the years. Definitely a good hog population, especially if your creek holds water year round.

How do you keep hunters out with no fences. I mean a poacher will cross a fence but in general most people don’t know boundaries without a fence. I would at least put up a 5 strand barbed wire. It effect the deer and pigs coming in or out. If you want deer and pigs put up a couple of feeders and keep them going year around. They will come and stay.

I am surrounded by about a plot about 78 acres on 3 sides, it's the same plot, the north border is a deep creek...

I am looking at purple paint, and currently there are 2 entrances, once gate will be purple-painted,
the backside I will paint purple trees on the 3-sides, like the queen of hearts painted the roses red.

I plan on Cell game cameras, and solar panels to charge them, eventually, but for now it's just a private range, 36+ acres of private range. laugh

If someone wants to poach, no skin off my back, if I have purple boundary markers, but I plan on contacting the buyer of the property on 3 sides and having a handshake agreement that we can retrieve bleeding game, and if agreeable, even hunt on each other's land... Fingers crossed!

Everywhere I've hunted in Texas had poaching and/or trespassers.
They may not hunt, they may not steal, they will for sure eyeball
your goods and camp. Even if somebody is living there, trespassing
still happens. A place I hunted years back to the west had trespassing
even though the landowner lived on site. He always swore nobody
crossed his fence, but one year we found a gap cut in the farthest
back fence with ATV tracks passing through heavy. We fixed that
and told him, but it was really too big a place for him to check
every foot of boundary. You can rest assured that any neighbors
see and know whenever you come and go. I've caught a couple
of different ones and they felt like old mister so-and-so used to
let us do whatever we wanted to here ( even though many have
the same or more land than you do)
The strangest was the morning two boys came up and knocked
on the door. I thought who in the hell could that be. Two kids
in the middle of bfe from nowhere. They asked if I had any
22 shells they could have, daddy has some in his closet, but
him and his girlfriend are still asleep. We're sorry for coming
here. Daddy always tells us to not come over here when
you're here, and to wait until you leave

Also meant to add
Put a fence up if it's your land.
If somebody crosses a fence there's no excuse
saying that I didn't see the purple painted trees

Honest to God this just happen to me:
I put up no trespassing signs every 200 feet with "Taylor - 817-808-0000" on them. Used purple paint in-between.
I have yet to get a gate up, but that's my next project. I got a call the second day the signs where up. A man said,
" I drove all over your place to try to see why you did not want anybody on it but I could not see anything." I said it was
because I was deer hunting and did not want to accidently shoot someone. He said that made sense and hung up.
You can't make this crap up!

If you are OK with people on your property, and if you do or don't get a deer, sounds like you are good to go. Use Zatarans crab boil to cook your crawfish.

I’ve been on 6 leases over the years and all but one had poaching/trespassing going on.
One we were on for 22 years, we never had any evidence of trespassing, that was in Gillespie county.
Fences cut, aluminum arrows found, cameras stolen, people on cameras, even caught a guy in the stand one morning.
All that puts pressure on deer and they will go nocturnal quick.
I own my own property now and will never lease again.
I would definitely fence it plus purple paint.

Yeah
I have a small collection of empty rifle cases and shotgun hulls
where trespassing poachers neglected to do a thorough policing
of the evidence. Dirty toilet paper, cigarette butts, one cigar
right by the shack, chair marks poked in the dirt after a dove
hunt and a semi circle worn in the grass from scooting their
feet around, etc. etc.
Stupid people don't think about that they leave sign.
One game camera smashed and the batteries and card
pulled and the strap cut

Must be a "grass is greener " thing

OMG, that is phrikin' horrible!

I have the day off today, and will be picking up a Stihl chainsaw today, maybe a trailer and a quad
to scout the land, and clear some areas the F-150 can't get in, yet.

I have got to read up on some Trailcams, like what does the service cost on the cellular ones, and which brands can
daisy-chain off one cell plan for multiple cameras?

I would not even bring this idea up, if you wanna make friends and be a good neighbor. That would set off alarm bells for any landowner. See "Good fences make good neighbors."

Some good deer and hogs for sure in that area. But a gate and paint ain't gonna keep the locals out and in fact when you gate it and purple paint it my belief is those new 'signs' are just going to entice the local trashto investigate and figure out if you add feeders etc that the hunting must be good and will monitor your coming/going so they can trespass/poach on the newly upgraded 'range'. Making friends with neighbors is good idea but I too would not ask about reciprical hunting.
