My current 8.5¢ plan is up in a week. Need to get a new one and looking at www.powertochoose.org. The cheapest plans for 2000+kWh are starting at 13.5¢. I'm trying to decide if I do a short 3 month plan and hope rates drop during Q4 or just go ahead and get a longer plan with a cancellation fee of $150 and pay that fee to cancel if/when rates drop significantly.

Anyone else had to do this recently?

I did at the beginning of the year and got 12.5 for 3 years. Will cancel and pay the fee if the price goes down significantly but I don't see it happening in the next 2 years or until a Republican takes the WH.

Lots of folks use energyogre to find the best plans for them. I think the cost well pays for itself.

Energy Ogre was of no use after I entered in my usage and provider information: "You chose your last plan wisely, so we are not able to save you any money right now..."

I think that I'd go short.

It will take a while to undo the damage the senile fool has caused. I’d lock in for as long as I could. It’s going to do nothing but go up.

Not any help to you, but I was on Discount Power at $0.055 per kwh and had to renew in August. I signed again with them for 36 months at $0.118 per kwh and when I got my first bill last week it was at $0.1055 per kwh along with a note saying that since I was a returning customer I qualified for the lower rate. I couldn't believe it!

Good luck. No way to compensate for the inflation. Energy Ogre has done me no good.

My thought process is to look at txu free nights and weekends. Torture myself during day.

"Free" is not free at all on those plans.

Yeah, no thanks for TXU. TXU "Free Nights" is 22¢ per kWh. Probably 90% of my family's electric usage would fall outside of those hours.

Here's another hilarious horrible plan from TXU: "Solar Value 12: 24.2¢ per kWh. Lock in a low rate and support solar farms in Texas."

I think I'm going short term with 3 months at 13.6¢. Natural gas is forecasted to go down, so hopefully electric prices will follow in the short term.

I have lived in Frisco 13 years, never once have I looked at how much I pay for electricty nor how much I pay for KWH, I take what they give me and I like it.

I'm on tnmp out here. Cheapest plan for me last week was 15.4 per kwh at 2000kwh, I signed for 3 years. It's going to suck coming from my 9.9 that expires end of October

Try calling Energy Ogre, they got me in a better plan with low cancellation fees. Energy Ogre is not signing anyone to plans longer than 12 months, they feel prices will drop.

Energy Ogre has not been able to help me and that is without their fee.

The TXU and Reliant gimmick plans are for suckers. Natural gas is forecast to jump this winter and start dropping in 2023 to $6.

How many more of these are going to come up? Can we just continue on one thread?! Everybody renewing is getting raped, lock in the cheapest price with the cheapest buyout in case prices magically drop!

I'd lock it in for longer. $150 is less than 1 months of service, that's a cheap cancellation fee.

Thought I'd refresh this thread. It looks like my strategy to avoid getting locked into a longer term, higher priced plan worked.

I had an 8.5¢ per kWh plan that expired at the end of September 2022. At that time, I went with a 13.5¢ plan for 3 months because I kept reading that natural gas prices would drop. Sure enough, they did. At the end of December 2022, I went with another provider on a 3 month plan for 10.4¢. None of the longer term plans were available at that price range- all 12 month+ plans were significantly higher than the 3 month plans. Fast forward 3 months later, the current 3-month plans are as low as 7.6¢, but there are now 12-36 month plans available for 10¢ - 10.4¢. It's still higher than my 8.5¢ plan that ended 6 months ago, but it's a whole lot better than the 18-20¢ plans that people were renewing at last summer.

And I don't use Energy Ogre, just Powertochoose.org.

Been getting raped @ 18.5c since last summer when we had to renew. Energy ogre just swapped me today to a new plan at 10.6c … only had to eat a $60 early termination fee which I happily approved.

My plan just ended and Energy Ogre got me switched over to Value Power. This is a 12 month contract with a $250 cancelation and 11 cents per KW for 2000KW. Don't remember how much my other plan was. I figured this one wasn't too bad considering how things are right now.

How much are you guys paying for Energy Ogre? What are they providing that Powertochoose.org is not? The rates I can get right now are low 10s without paying any finder's fee.

$10/month. I agree it’s “easy” to swim through the rate mud yourself if you are competent in basic math, excel, and reading comprehension. Personally I’m happy to pay them to outsource that effort. I spent almost 10 years doing structural analysis ... The last thing I want to do with my free time is more number crunching, especially when I factor in what free time is really worth.
