Came across this timber rattler during teal season. He was a good 3' long. No I did not kill it, but appears it was ran over sometime that morning.

I'm not so much worried about snakes for myself. Don't necessarily like them, but not overall afraid. In the dove field I am normally always wearing snake boots, and waders are baggy enough I would be suprised a snake could penatrate enough to get skin.

What I am concerned about is my dog getting tagged by cotton mouth or rattler. I've heard they are likely to be ok, but I also know some don't make it. Losing a dog to a snake bite would be tough.

The reality is I've probably walked by many snakes in the dark and never saw them.

Anyone here ever have a dog get snake bit?

Have any snake encounter stories?

I live on a lake. When my lab was younger, he was constantly killing water snakes in the back yard. I took him to snake avoidance clinic and got the rattlesnake vaccine for him. I plan to continue this routine. We haven't had any more encounters with snakes at home. It is constantly in my mind when in the field. He is well trained in obedience, if I observe him acting unusual I can call him off.

Scared? No
Very cautious. Yes

Teal water and cottonmouth water seem to overlap. I’ve seen and killed a lot of water moccasins hunting and scouting for teal. I do not walking through dry smart weed flats next to water, for some reason those water moccasins like that combo.

My brother's cocker got bitten in the nose a few months ago. It was either a cottonmouth or a rattler. His face swelled up really good, but after the anti-venom he was ok (took a few days). Not always the case though.

Since, he has been through snake training. Apparently it's very effective. After that, he shouldn't willingly approach a snake again.

Same.

I do not do walk in teal hunts any more. Last time many years ago, scouting during the day. I said to myself “I should probably be looking down for snakes”, I kid you not, I look down right then and one was right in front of me in striking distance. I moonwalked out of there, thanked the lord and said I’m done with walk in teal hunts.

Carry Benadryl 25 mg tablets. Give one immediately and then if not at the vet ny an hour's time, give another one. The only best thing you can di is get the training to avoid, the vaccine in case of a bite. Having a plan is essential. The plan is train to avoid, vaccine in case of a bite, Benadryl on the way to the vet and know where you're going. I can't tell you how many times I have heard, "My dog got bit and we headed to the closest town at 100 mph". They get there and are told they have to go 150 miles the other direction because they are not a designated bite facility. Call ahead to the vets and find one that has 24 hour bite care. You are way far ahead of the game just knowing the right place to go and not wasting time.

I train with copperheads and moccasins as well as rattlers. After 18 years I have only heard of two dogs killed by a water moc. They are dangerous but not near like a rattler.

Thanks for all that Wayne! Benadryl for rattle snake?

I dove hunt around Haskell, just call Haskell Vegetarian Clinic (940-864-3496), they treat rattle snake bites, and if off hours, they said let it ring and ring, and will give you a number to call on-call vet, they will call you back if they do not pick up, and meet you at the clinic!

Boating in won't always save your arse Guy. I've had cottonmouths swim by the boat or through the spread while teal hunting. Also had one fall in the boat from the tree I stuffed the boat under while we were loading up to leave. eek

Oh I know, but it does lower my risk. I have encounter them several times. One time walking on a trail thru the woods, one small one right in front of me, with its mouth wide open, all white, looked wicked. The small ones can be most dangerous, because they will empty all their venom in you.

Had one swim in between me and my dog once. One time I'm setting in lily pads 2 foot of water on a stool, minutes before legal I think "Maybe I should look around for snakes", I look to my right and one is curled up on a lily pad right next to me, I blew it to bits, and was waiting for GW to get me for shooting early..this one could have been a water snake, but I blew it to bits anyway.

I had to go find this pic. This was 11/25/2010, this is the small one I walked up on I discussed above. Interesting it was late in November. Its mouth was wide open, up in the air, when I walked up on it, by the time I got my camera out to take a pic it shut its mouth and settled down...

I got bit by a copperhead. The bite felt similar to a bee sting, very painful when the flesh kinda rotted. I kill every venomous snake I see. [Linked Image]

Yep mouth 'gaping' is classic Cottonmouth behavior. Its their 'warning' not to approach further or engage them.

But most actually take quite a bit of agitating to prompt a bite. Copperheads on the other hand will bite right away.

Walked up on this small, drab colored moccasin and it did what they normally do.

Not sure if the Haskell Vegetarian Clinic is the best place for snake bites. banana2

Aldo got tagged last fall by a coontail. The vet said the face is oddly enough the best place a dog can get bit.
More or less, in 3 days he was good. We only did antibiotics, no anti venom or anything else. He's got the scar to show for it now.

Wow, it is amazing he is alive and recovered so quickly. How fast did you get him to the vet? I suspect your dog did not get very much venom in him.

Dogs are really good about recovering from bites.
He had swelling all down in his chest. He was at the vet within an hour or so.
