We've been doing a little archery hunting for whitetails on the ranch but nothing even close yet.
Wednesday we go over to Saratoga for a couple of days to find a pronghorn buck or 2, we have doe tags also, with a rifle.
Coming back Thursday and headed up to the ranch again for last push with the bows and getting things ready for the owner and his family to elk hunt.

We have pronghorn licenses in an area with good access to some BLM lands and we have about 3,300 acres of private to hunt as well.
Area is not known for big bucks but the spouse has taken a 15 1/2 inch buck in the past. We look for a mature buck and we're happy.
Sage grouse season will be open too so maybe the shotgun will go along.

Weather may be iffy, cool front with moisture, hoping it's not wet heavy snow.

Couple of past pics from the area.

Safe travels Reata, where are you headed?

Some more moisture coming end of the weekend I believe, at least cooler. It is chilly at night now.

Quick update from the hunt. Some success today. I took a decent buck and the spouse took a very nice, easy doe.
More pics tomorrow when we get home.
We've seen a ton of deer, elk and bighorn sheep. Not a ton of pronghorn but enough I guess.
It's raining tonight, cold front moved in and part of our area may not be accessible in the morning due to mud.

I enjoy Antelope hunting in Wyoming. Been 40 years but went there 3 times, once with my wife. We always got a nice one.
That was before you had to draw any tags, just bought over the counter and paid some land owners $25 trespass fees
and you were all set.

Her are some better pics. I put a tape to him and was pleasantly surprised, 15" + on one side.
He is the kind of buck that one needs to look over from all angles if possible, not looking very long from the front view but the side shows what he has.
Rain kept us form going out this morning, one road we have to take gets impassable after a soaking. Spouse says maybe we'll go back to find him a buck in Oct.

Kennaday Peak in the doe background pics, we've hunted elk on that mountain many times.
I'll post some scenic pics later.

I found a cool one. Had elk bugling up the hill while I was quartering him up.

I love the hooks on that antelope, the way they turn back down is really nice. Congratulations.

Thank you.

A few hunt details.

We mostly hunt public land there but have access to a ranch, they have hay meadows along the creek and some range type land.
We drove over from Laramie that morning bright and early, got there just about daylight. One part of the area has access through town so we headed out that way.

The road goes through private land for about 3 miles and has sign stating please stay on road til you hit the BLM land.
Luckily the ranch we had permission had about 30 acres or so along the border on the road. We spotted this buck on another private ranch but right on the fence. He meandered along it and finally started away from the fence and smaller bucks grazing the other side. We decided to abandon him, the bordering rancher does not allow hunting so we hit the BLM.

Spouse chased a decent buck for about an hour, no go. We drove around and spotted smaller bucks but nothing interesting so we decided to go back through town to hit the other part of the area.

Got to the private /BLM border and my buck was bedded on the ranch we had permission on. I got out, crossed the 2 track and setup, he stood up and I shot him at about 100 yds. He made a 75 yd death run and piled up about 20 yds from the fence.
We drove right to him, took pics and quartered him up for the cooler.
One of the easiest in several years.
Had no idea on length but he goes about 15 1/4-1/2 inches. Best buck we saw that day on public.

We usually choose to go later in season but had time early this year, we were very surprised how much more almost relaxed they were. Numbers are way down but we did see quite a few doe and good bucks on the private land. One of the outfitters in the area has great bucks on the pivots and other lands.

Headed up Thursday morning for several days of whitetail and elk hunting. We should have nice fall weather and cold nights.
Hoping the WT bucks we've been watching are still around.
Elk can be tricky, many or none for days.

Got word the LO took a bull and a cow on their hunt.
He said go get 'em so it sounds like elk are still around.
Another outfitter told me he saw elk on us yesterday from the highway so that also is good news.

Elk might be up before WT with this news.

We're going to have brisk mornings and nice days and snow just after we leave next week, thankful for no snow right now.
Coolbot should work great with cooler nights, might not even need it. The walk in is about 4x10 or so and an open door at night is fine sometimes.

These guys are the bucks we are targeting, not huge by any means but mature bucks for our area. They rubbed off about 1st week in Sept or so.
They were still around last weekend but further up the meadows.
