DON'T laugh. I always thought greyhounds were sort of overly skinny, non-aggressive type dogs but I'm reading a Teddy Roosevelt book that they used greyhounds in running down wolves and coyotes and the greyhounds would tear right into them. Anyone have any experience?

Yep I used to go with a buddy at work on the weekends. It was more fun than should be allowed. They hated those coyotes. Every once in a while we would turn out on a jackrabbit. That was fun too.

In the 1950s western Oklahoma my Grandfather used sight hounds, Irish Wolfhound and Greyhound mixes to hunt coyotes. I seem to remember he said it was to collect the bounty on them. In Oklahoma today it is now illegal to hunt coyotes with sight dogs. He also used coonhounds for the initial chase. He said the coonhounds would ride on top of the dog box, but the sight hounds would then be turned out to run the coyotes down and kill them.

I grew up running greyhound’s after jackrabbits in okla. there were also coyote hunters, most of the time there will be a kill dog in your pack. He is the fighter. Around people, they are a very calm pet.

Back in the late 40's, my father in law spent a year in a cast as leg and pelvis healed from multiple breaks obtained while standing in the back of a pickup that rolled over while chasing greyhounds and coyotes...There was a whole group of men here in Bishop that loved that sport....Wish I would have been around to particiate!

Yes sir. Greyhounds will chase and kill coyotes. They are used in southwestern OK where the fields are wide open flat farmland without barbwire fences. A greyhound will run right into barbwire while giving chase, Not a good thing. Afghans and Salukis are also long distance sight hounds but they do not have the speed of the greyhound although they will chase farther, A whippet is a fabulous hound for rabbiting. They are quicker than any other sighthound for short distances. I used to own racing Whippets. They can outpace a greyhound from a standing start for the first few hundred feet but then the bigger hound catches and passes them. We are speaking of field bred dogs here, not show dogs. sadly there is a huge difference in performance. The field bred dogs are not pretty to the eye but they can flat out fly.

My Granddad who grew up in Dalhart told stories of his greyhound "Cricket" and the coyotes she would run down.

Dad always had 20+ coyote hounds. Walker Foxhounds is actually what they were. He would meet up at dusk with other hunters, each having a pickup load of hounds and they would turn a few of their old broke dogs loose that wouldn't run anything else but a coyote some time after dark. The best nights when scenting conditions were at its best were cool clear still nights with no wind and some dew on the grass. After the old dogs would open up and give mouth and start trailing, the coyote would realize hounds were after him and start running then the race would be on and the hunters would turn the rest of their hounds loose. If they caught the coyote, fine and if they didn't, fine. The thrill was listening to the hounds run and friendly competition of hound owners because you could tell how much they opened (barked) if they were really running their game or not. Many times when scenting conditions were good, hounds would still be running a coyote when the sun came up the next morning. All those old hunters are long since gone, Wonderful, kind, salt of the earth men from the WW2 generation.

They will learn to do so if they are taken hunting when young with older dogs that are laser focused in doing so. Greyhounds just love to chase.
